'I wanted to be present': Dannii Minogue reveals she quit judging duties on The X Factor Australia to spend more time with her five-year-old son Ethan

She announced in February that she would be 'taking a break' from judging duties on The X Factor Australia.

And Dannii Minogue has now opened up to TV Week about her decision to quit the hit singing show, citing her five-year-old son Ethan as her priority. 

With her only child starting school this year, the 44-year-old said she wanted to ensure she didn't miss a beat of this important time in his life.

'I've put a hold on TV and stuff that would take me away from being at home,' she said.  

'My son starting school is something I would never get to do again,' she explained.

'I wanted to be present and be a part of it with him, and enjoy it.'

The pop star and sister of pop queen Kylie is clearly besotted with her son, who she shares with former partner Kris Smith, and added that teaching him to read has been 'mind-blowing'.

Dannii has been a judge on the British and Australian versions of X Factor for seven years in total, but her presence in the series has not been without controversy.

She became a judge on the British X Factor in 2007, making her first appearance in the fourth season of the series alongside Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne.

Two of her chosen acts, Leon Jackson and Rhydian Roberts from the Boys category made it to the final round, and Leon was awarded winner after topping the public vote.

However, several fellow judges including Ronan Keating, Noel Gallagher and Graham Norton questioned her credentials.

She was left in tears after an on-air row with Louis Walsh over a choice of song, and after the fifth season she declared to The Independent she 'would never want to go through that again'.

But she returned to film the sixth season in 2009 and her final season was the seventh.

Then in 2013, she took the role of judge and mentor on the Australian X Factor alongside Ronan Keating, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and fellow new judge Redfoo. 

The year 2015 saw Dannii judge alongside Guy Sebastian, James Blunt and Chris Isaak.

Although she has taken a step back from X Factor for the time being, Dannii described TV as her 'love and passion' and said working in the television industry felt 'very comfortable'.
