She's estranged from her mother - having taken the drastic step of legally emancipating herself.

But Ariel Winter still has a close relationship with her father, as shown when the two posed together before she went to prom at the weekend.

'Dad saw me off to #prom!! Love him,' wrote the teen star of Modern Family, sharing pictures from her big night.

The 18-year-old was the picture of elegance in the figure-hugging dress with a sweetheart neckline and a small train.

The black and white number fit like a glove, and was a striking contrast to Ariel's fiery red hair, which she styled in big, bold curls.

Ariel showed off a bit of a smoky eye, but balanced out the look with a softer, pink lipstick.

She accessorized her look with a small, gold wristlet, and was seen posing in front of a large fountain.

Ariel does not speak to her mother - Chrisoula Workman - having gone through years of legal battles with her mom over allegations that she emotionally and physically abused her as a child.

Aged 14 she moved in with her older sister Shanelle Workman, who was later granted custody.

However, she is clearly close to her father Glenn Workman, who also posed with her before she attended prom last year.

This time the actress was not seen with her boyfriend Laurent - who graduated last year - as she left for prom.

She did, however, share a black and white photograph of her standing with her back to a friend as she pulled a coy face.
