Hit me baby one more time: Britney Spears' longtime make-up artist reveals exactly how she created the pop star's smoky eye and nude lip at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards

  • Britney, 34, took home the Millennium Award at the Billboard Music Awards
  • She stunned while performing a five-minute medley of her greatest hits
  • Make-up pro Mélanie Inglessis breaks down the products she used to create Britney's sultry look and gives tips for making them work for you

At last night's Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, all eyes were on Britney Spears. The 34-year-old pop star received the third-ever Millennium Award and kicked off the show with a medley of her greatest hits.

From the time she hit the red carpet through the moment she accepted her award, though, it was Britney's smoky eye and nude lip combo that we couldn't stop staring at.

Make-up artist Mélanie Inglessis crafted the look, which lasted throughout the evening - including the singer's mega performance. Below, she breaks down how she did it.

Make-up of the millennium! Britney Spears, 34, may have won the Billboard Music Millennium Award but her nude lipstick and smoky eye deserve their own top honors

Melanie has worked with Britney many times in the past, including on some of her iconic album covers, and told Dailymail.com that the process 'is always a collaboration,' but it helps that 'we know and trust each other.'

The goal of last night's make-up was 'to create a look that was timeless, complemented Britney's beauty and also could be worn with all the outfits changes.'

The first key to her timeless look? A flawless complexion.

Melanie prepped Britney's skin with a combination of Tom Ford Illuminating Primer, Benefit the POREfessional: Matte Rescue Invisible-Finish Mattifying Gel and EX1 Cosmetics Invisiwear Liquid Foundation.

'The skin was very important as I wanted Britney's skin to glow from within and really be luminous,' she said. 'I wanted it to look like skin and be breathable yet stay put for the performance.'

The bronzed and the beautiful? Nope, Melanie claims Britney's darker complexion was the product of lighting, not extra bronzer

All that glitters is gold: Melanie said she loaded Brit's rocking bod up with shimmer. 'What's Vegas without a little shimmer?' she said

After making the perfect base, Melanie used three EX1 Cosmetics products (the Blusher in Pretty in Peach, the Delete Anti-Blemish Concealer and the Invisiwear Compact Powder in P300) to hide dark circles and add color to the singer's face.

The way Britney's skin glowed during her performance made us think additional bronzer had been applied after the carpet, but Melanie insists it was nothing more than the lighting playing tricks on our eyes. 'The light on the red carpet was really bright versus on stage.'

Melanie did, however, use body make-up to highlight Brit Brit's toned physique. 'We used Shimmer!!!!!! What is Vegas without a little shimmer?' she exclaimed.

She's so lucky! Britney's make-up only needed minimal touch-ups throughout her many outfit changes

As for the eyes, Melanie applied several dark shadows from Tom Ford and Laura Mercier to get Britney's sexy, smoky effect.

If you're trying to re-create the look at home, the pro advised sticking with cream shadows -they're easier to blend - and opting for earth tones like flattering browns and gold.

'Only use black in the waterline to accentuate the intensity of the look,' she said.

Melanie then lined Britney's lips with the Surratt Moderniste Lip Pencil in Tendre Basier and filled them in with the YSL Rouge Pur Couture Satin Radiance Lipstick in Beige Tribute.

Choosing a nude lip color that doesn't wash you out can be tricky. 'Don’t go for too pastel of colors,' Melanie said. 'You want to have a little life to your nude lipstick - and stay away from a purple-based nude.'

After Britney's performance, Melanie said she only needed minor touch-ups with powder and lipstick. Impressively, the star's eye make-up didn't seem to budge - but Melanie isn't revealing her secrets, saying only 'it's because I'm a pro.'
