SPOILER ALERT: Fear The Walking Dead midseason finale ends with Nick making amends as Daniel Salazar sees dead wife

It was a fiery midseason finale on Fear The Walking Dead on Sunday as the Mexican compound went up in flames.

The episode showed Madison Clark's family torn apart as her son Nick chose zombies over an escape route with her and his sister.

Travis Manawa [Cliff Curtis] was also separated from Madison Clark, as his son Chris descended deeper into sociopathy.

Special delivery: Nick brought back Celia's zombified son Luis on Sunday's midseason finale of Fear The Walking Dead

The show opened with Celia [Marlene Forté] screaming at Victor [Colman Domingo] over the corpse of Victor's lover Thomas Abigail [Dougray Scott].

Thomas perished after a zombie bite compelled Victor to shoot him in the head.

After calling Victor a soulless liar Celia smacked him around the head with a feisty backhand.

'You love no one, you believe in nothing,' she bellowed.

Ghostly visions: Daniel Salazar saw visions of his late wife Griselda

Celia then decided to eject the whole crew from the villa.

'You have one day…the sun comes down, I want you gone, all of you,' she commanded.

Travis searched for Chris [Lorenzo James Henrie] who had fled after an apparent murder attempt against Alicia and Madison [Alycia Debnam-Carey and Kim Dickens].

One day: Celia kicked Victor Strand and his pals out of the villa and gave them one day to vacate

Injured and tired, Travis stumbled across a kindly Mexican man who gave him shoes and some water.

He then found Chris holding the man's young son hostage with a gun.

'Why can't you just let me go?' said Chris menacingly.

Bad kid: Chris took a boy hostage at gunpoint in an attempt to evade his father

No good: Travis disarmed his son who acknowledged that he was 'no good'

Travis attempted to punch him and they got into a fight.

'Look at me, I'm no good, I'm no good,' said Chris.

Nick [Frank Dillane] came to retrieve Travis but he refused to leave.

Not going: Nick came to retrieve Travis but learned that he was staying with his troubled son Chris

'I can't come back,' he said, instructing Nick to lie to his fiancee Madison.

'Say you never saw me,' he begged as he decided that Chris needed help from his father.

Earlier at the compound Nick had shown up with a live walker in tow as a gift for Celia.

Live walker: Luis was retrieved by Nick and brought back to his mother Celia

Risky move: Nick had Luis tied up and gagged when he brought him back

'You belong here with us,' Celia told him as she greeted her zombified son.

'What about my family?' he asked.

'They are not like you,' she responded, explaining her view that walkers should not be killed because they are 'not in control of their actions'.

Bonding moment: Celia was pleased that Nick brought back Luis and let his family stay

Nick persuaded her to let them stay.

'This is not the apocalypse…this is the beginning of life eternal,' she said creepily.

Madison chastised Nick for risking his life to capture a zombie.

At an impasse: Nick tried to explain his actions to Madison but she warned him to stay away from Celia

Under attack: Alycia was still reeling from finding Chris in her bedroom with a knife

'I brought him back and now we get to stay,' he told her.

'I move among them mom, invisible, I will not die,' he said confidently.

Madison later asked Celia to help her understand her ethos about preserving the walkers.

Celia took her to the dungeon and Madison took the opportunity to lock her in the cage with the hungry undead.

In the cellar: Madison locked Celia in the cage with the hungry undead

As Victor tried to dig a grave for Tom, Daniel [Rubén Blades] warned him not to put the body in the ground.

'This place is unholy..he will not rest,' he said solemnly.

Daniel and Ofelia [Mercedes Mason] then got into a ruckus as he tried to make her leave.

'This place is evil,' yelled Daniel who lashed out and cut one of the men in the face with his blade.

Celia professed that  Daniel was a 'danger to himself' and had him tied up.

'Those creatures that you keep, they are an abomination, an act against god,' Daniel told her.

In the face: Daniel stabbed a man in the face while trying to get Ofelia to leave with him

Tied up: Celia had Daniel restrained after he attacked people

While captive, Daniel spoke with an apparition of his dead wife Griselda [Patricia Reyes Spíndola].

With her encouragement he broke free and set fire to the walkers and the entire compound.

Amid the blaze Victor returned to save Madison, Alicia and Ofelia.

She's back: Griselda returned in apparition form and scolded Daniel for not burying her

Lit up: Daniel escaped and set the compound ablaze

Turned around: Victor Strand was leaving but returned to rescue Madison and her family

Obstinate Nick refused to leave.

'She was right about us, Celia…she knew what we are, we destroy everything,' he told his mother dejectedly.

The show ended with Victor, Alicia, Madison and Ofelia escaping in a van, while Nick walked toward the flames and wild zombies.

Season two of Fear The Walking Dead will resume with eight more episodes later this year on AMC. 

Stayed behind: Nick was dejected by the fire and decided to stay behind
