Let him date Bucky! Fans want Disney to give Captain America a boyfriend... following Twitter campaign to find girlfriend for Frozen's Elsa

Disney is finding itself in the crosshairs of two Internet-driven campaigns to create same sex partners for two of its iconic big screen characters.

Earlier this month, the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend started tending as part of a campaign to persuade the studio to include a lesbian storyline in the sequel to the blockbuster animated film Frozen.

And on Tuesday, a similar campaign went viral demanding that the Mouse House find a boyfriend for Marvel comics superhero Captain America.

And to make the task easier, fans already have a boyfriend in mind - Captain America's best friend Bucky.

The Marvel character was presumed to be heterosexual given his romance with Peggy Carter, played on screen by Hayley Atwell.

But  after she was killed off in the recently released Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers played by Chris Evans is back on the market.... despite kissing his dead girlfriend's niece at the funeral.

Fans supporting the Twitter campaign argue that the relationship between Rogers and his childhood friend James Buchanan, played by Sebastian Stan, is already a love story. He was willing to fight wars and give up his shield for Bucky.

But those opposed to the idea say they're fed-up with the LGBT community co-opting 'straight' characters for their own agenda.

They argue that instead of changing already established characters, new gay characters would be introduced into the plotlines.

Fans opposed to the idea argue that making a character gay just for the sake of it is wrong, and suggest it would be better to introduce a new gay character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead

On Sunday, actress Idina Menzel, who provides the voice for Frozen's Elsa, said she's cool with the idea of the princess having a girlfriend.

'I think it's great,' she told ET on the red carpet at Sunday's Billboard Music awards in Las Vegas.

'Disney's just gotta contend with that. I'll let them figure that out,' she said.

However, as the LA Times reported Tuesday, those in favor of Elsa and Captain America exploring their gay side face an uphill battle.

GLAAD has stated that Disney did not feature a single LGBT character in any of its major 2015 films and that 'Of all the studios tracked in this report, Walt Disney Studios has the weakest historical record when it comes to LGBT-inclusive films.'
