He was once the sultry heartthrob adored by millions - but since his marriage to Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has gone from Hollywood hotty to paunchy and puffy-faced.

52-year-old Johnny's changing appearance comes as Amber filed for divorce on Monday, just days after the death of his mother, Betty Sue Palmer and 15 months after they married in the Bahamas.

The actress, 30, submitted court documents on Monday citing irreconcilable differences and seeking spousal support, amid claims his family hated her.

Depp, who is worth $400 million and owns a private island in The Bahamas, in turn filed his own legal documents asking the judge to reject his estranged wife's request for maintenance.

A source says the couple do not have a pre-nuptial agreement in place, according to TMZ.   

DailyMail.com sought confirmation from the couple's spokesperson but did not receive an immediate response.

The Donnie Brasco and Sleepy Hollow star first met Amber in 2009 while making the film The Rum Diary and married in the Bahamas in February 2015.

They exchanged vows under a flower-adorned marquee on the beach of the Black Mass star's private island Little Hall's Pond Cay. Just 24 guests were in attendance.

However, it is understood they got married legally in Los Angeles first so his ailing mother was able to attend. Johnny claimed it wasn't until after work on The Rum Diaries had been completed that he realized he had fallen for Amber.

He said 'She was in my head, so I tracked her down,' Johnny said on stage at the 31st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival back in February.

In January, whilst receiving an award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, he thanked Amber in his speech 'for putting up with me, for living with all these characters, which can't be easy.'

'It's hard for me. It's got to be hard for her,' he quipped.

Currently in the throes of promoting his new film Alice Through The Looking Glass, which opens in the U.S. on Friday, the star looks worlds apart from his former self.

He was solo at the movie's premiere in LA on Monday and again as he arrived for an appearance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he appeared a little disheveled.

The couple have not been photographed together in public since mid-April. 

Their romance has been overshadowed by a run-in with Australian authorities after Heard snuck her dogs Pistol and Boo into the country while Depp was filming the latest installment of Pirates of the Caribbean last year.

She received a $1,000 fine and a one-month good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to one count of falsifying border protection documents when entering the country in 2015.

As part of a plea deal, Johnny and Amber then made a cringe-worthy confession video which spawned countless memes and parodies.

Back in February, Johnny performed at the Grammys with his band The Hollywood Vampires and the movie star indeed looked something of a fright.

The Hollywood leading man with legions of female fans looked as old as his rocker sidekicks Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, who are both more than a decade older than him.

The actor appeared rumpled in jeans that were too long and a vest that was a little too tight as he posed for photos on the red carpet with disheveled hair.

The star has looked somewhat different to the man the world fell in love with in the 90s.

Johnny stayed true to his quirky style with a red shirt, matching pocket square and snazzy suede shoes.

Whilst he left the trademark shades at home, he stuck to his bohemian style by wearing a cluster of necklaces to decorate his chest.

At a press conference for the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival, Johnny looked somewhat bloated.

On that occasion, he wore a driver's cap, vest and light blue shirt along with his signature blue-tinted shades.

Noticing the star's new look, a guest blogger for the New York Post, writing under the alias Regina George, noted at the time: 'The actor’s face, chiseled just a few months ago, had swelled into a puffy oval, and the rest of his body looked as if it had gotten just as round.

'His hair appeared greasier than usual, and topping off his look, one of his teeth was red for some mysterious reason. A stain? A stray piece of cranberry? Some sort of pirate thing? We have no idea.'

Social media users echoed her words and noted that the star looked more fuller figured than he has done in the past. Many asked 'what has happened to Johnny Depp?', whilst another tweeted fashion designer Victoria Beckham asking her to lend her styling expertise to the father-of-two. 

Indeed, his look is a far cry from the man we grew up with. Following his rise to fame in 21 Jump Street in the 1980s, he fast become a teen idol thanks to his moody, rugged look.

However, not satisfied with that status, he turned to film for more challenging roles starring in blockbusters such as 1990's Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow in 1999, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005, which all helped secure his status as a Hollywood pin-up.

Thanks to his good looks, Depp has had his fair share of high-profile relationships with beautiful women.  

His first wife was Lori Anne Allison, who he married in 1983 before divorcing her two years later.

He also got engaged to actresses Jennifer Grey and Sherilyn Fennel in the late 1980s before proposing to Winona Ryder in 1990.

The duo starred in Edward Scissorhands together and he even had 'WINONA FOREVER' tattooed onto his arm.
