Captain Richard Brown (bottom right), a UK pilot with 20 years' aviation experience, came to MailOnline Travel's HQ to reveal what happens behind the flight-deck door for a series of insider video guides. In this, the first, he talks about the two most crucial phases of a flight - take-off and landing. The changing face of La Dolce Vita: Evocative photographs capture Italy's dramatic development over the last 50 years
Italy's most famous photographer, Gianni Berengo Gardin, has spent over half a century capturing a changing world, and now recognises that even his own profession is fading fast. In a major retrospective of his work at Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Berengo Gardin's black-and-white photographs capture Italy's shift from a largely rural economy to its rapid industrialisation following World War Two. Pictured are a couple dancing in Rome (main), children skipping in Venice (bottom left) and a kiss in a colonnade off Piazza San Marco, in Venice (bottom right).

The pair shot to fame after photos emerged on the internet of them cruising the rivers between Moscow and St Petersburg dressed in the height of maritime fashion.
The last days of feudal Japan: Incredible time-capsule images show gentle pace of life before the leap into the modern age
The pictures are from a collection compiled by German-born American scholar Arnold Genthe, who roamed the streets, camera in hand, during a six-month stay. As a young girl, Chelsea Herline had enjoyed three out of four days of her Disney hopper pass (inset), but missed out on the final day at the Orlando theme park because she was feeling too ill. But the magic wasn't over, as her father recently discovered the old ticket (left) in their basement and noticed it didn't have an expiry date. The company decided to let her redeem the park entry ticket 22 years later (right).
Couple 'devastated' after spending £6.5K on dream holiday to find 'refurbished' resort resembling a building site

Despite hotel Riu Le Morne (stock images inset top left and right) being advertised as having 'undergone a major refurbishment in early 2015', the couple claim that the resort had 'cables running across the whole building six days a week and a jackhammer right by the swimming pool'.
Dozens of British children rushed to hospital with vomiting and diarrhoea bug and placed on drips after falling ill at four-star Spanish hotel
Guests staying at the 180-bedroom Marina Parc hotel in the resort of Arenall D'en Castell on the island of Menorca say their holidays were ruined by the bug. Adorable pictures show orphaned baby sloths in the sanctuary where they learn all about life in the VERY slow lane
These pictures show impossibly cute baby sloths at the Sloth Institute in Costa Rica. The centre is a lifeline for them as they probably wouldn't have stood a chance if left alone in the wild. The centre was set up by Sam Trull - known as 'Mother of Sloths' - and Seda Sejud, in a bid to enhance their well-being and assure their conservation. Some of their babies are smaller than the size of a human hand, with one image showing a cheeky sloth snuggled up in a mug.
Inside the fortress city: Amazing images from the lawless Hong Kong slum, once home to 30,000 and one of the most densely populated place on earth
The dystopian Kowloon Walled City, an overcrowded slum in Hong Kong, was home to more than 30,000 residents, including families, gang members and drug addicts, before it was finally demolished in 1994. The settlement was a cluster of more than 300 high-rise buildings that were blighted by poverty, gangs, drugs, poor sanitation and inadequate services. These remarkable photos, showing everything from children playing on rooftops to heroin addicts shooting up on the street, reveal what life was like within the six-acre site.
A snow grotto where flakes fall from the ceiling, a platform with a glass floor and a transparent water slide: The best cruise ship amenities revealed
These days, cruise ships have so many amenities that passengers can spend a week at sea and fail to take advantage of everything on board. While many holidaymakers choose a cruise to escape the cold, Viking's ocean-going ships each have a Snow Grotto (inset) where artificial snowflakes fall from the ceiling. Those with a head for heights can walk on a glass platform 128ft above the water on two Princess Cruises' ships (left).
