NATURAL SLEEP – HOW MUCH SLEEP DO WE NEED? (SOCIETY)

Instead of waking with the first rays of sunshine so as to use every moment of natural light, we sleep through the most beautiful hours of the day and, of course, it it impossible to get our work done before the departing light invites us to sleep once more. In the summer, could we but follow the natural rhythm of life, like the animals in the wild, we would have longer working hours; we would then have a wonderful opportunity for resting and becoming regenerated in the winter. We do not have to hibernate, but by enjoying sweet sleep before midnight, we should be well enough rested to rise with the dawn and work during the daylight hours, giving in to the body’s natural demand for sleep at night. Perhaps you have never wondered why daylight appears and then disappears. We should do our business during the hours natural light is available, because this is nature’s way and rhythm. Natural sleep lasts from sunset to sunrise.
What would our civilisation say to such a way of living? Obviously a resounding ‘No!’. How could habits and customs be changed so drastically? From a social and economic viewpoint it would, at this time, seem impossible to adapt to this once natural pattern, although it would be healthier for us.
