Jamie Redknapp reveals he tells his dad Harry he loves him EVERY DAY on the phone - and wants to have the same relationship with his two boys

  • Jamie, 42, speaks to his dad Harry Redknapp every day
  • The pundit said his dad is a 'different generation' and is less affectionate
  • Jamie doesn't think his sons Charley and Beau will become footballers

He is a family man through-and-through, and Jamie Redknapp has confessed he doesn't hold back on his feelings to anyone - not even his father Harry.

Jamie, 42, who is married to ex-External singer Louise, admits he calls his football manager dad, known for his no-nonsense attitude, every day and tells him he loves him, even though 69-year-old Harry is not quite so keen to say it back.

Jamie, who is fronting a new Father's Day campaign, said he has made sure his sons, Charley, 11, and Beau, seven, work hard so they don't end up spoiled and hopes he will have the same relationship with them.

Jamie told FEMAIL: 'I've got an amazing relationship with my dad. I speak to him every day on the phone and tell him I love him. I hope I'll have that good a relationship with my own sons when they're older.

'I'll always give my mum a cuddle but my dad is a bit more "put your arm around him," he's not necessarily hugely affectionate.'

But Jamie puts this down to a 'different generation' and has tried to install more of a touchy-feely approach with his own sons.

'You can tell you dad you love him, even if we sometimes forget to do that.

'I think it's easier to tell your mum you love her, I think we're more manly,' he says about him and Harry.

While son Charley chips in over the phone, 'Women are cuddlers.' Although Jamie laughs back, 'I cuddle you too.'

Jamie agreed it's 'hard to put finger on it' why men are less likely to open up, but has been a hands-on-dad with sons Charley and Beau taking plenty of joy in his fatherly responsibilities.

He said: 'I love doing the school run, whether it's picking them up or taking them, seeing their little faces and putting the radio on. I love it we have fun.

'They don't stay young forever.'

But he adds he knows he's 'very lucky' to have the time to, since retiring from football in 2005 the former England player gets to see his boys while juggling his job as a pundit but a lot of parents can't because of their work hours.

The two boys have different personalities with Jamie joking: 'Charley's been a handful forever, ever since he was little. But now he's grown up, he's realised the value of hard work [at school].

'It's always different with the older one, then they set an example for the younger one.

'I'm definitely harder on him,' he said also being the younger sibling himself to Mark, who's a model, 'You learn mistakes from the older ones.'

Jamie's found it's best to share his undivided attention equally on the boys.

He said: 'I like to do things with Beau and Charley separately, they know then we'll go and do something special.

'Like Charley likes golfing and it's birthday coming up so we'll go and get him some new golf clubs.'

But Jamie adds: 'I wouldn't want to spoil them. I keep them grounded, everything they get we have to work for.

'And they understand that, they're not spoiled kids they don't ask for too much.'

And he's quick to applaud wife Louise as 'amazing' with their sons. Jamie hopes he'll get a bit of a treat next week and is supporting Braun's Father's Day campaign, for children to show their father they care.

'I'm hoping they make me a cup of tea or breakfast in bed. My boys often come up with a bowl of Lucky Charms,' he laughed.

While the day will be spent getting the whole family together, with him Louise and the boys going to dad Harry's house.

He said: 'What I always like to do, is get down to my dad's and take my kids, my brother normally comes too. Normally we get waited on by the mums. But even on mother's day we normally get waited on my the mums, we're very fortunate like that,' he added.

 DADS ARE NEGLECTED

Despite almost half of the nation’s youngsters’ polled saying they have 'the perfect dad', in a survey by Braun.

British fathers are losing out in the affection stakes when it comes to mums, with 81 per cent of children admitting they kiss mum more

Almost half of those polled (44 per cent) admitted that they take dad for granted

Almost half (44 percent) of youngsters feel dads 'do not need as much affection as mum.'

While Jamie said he's 'fortunate' both sons are sporty he says he has no expectations for them to be following on the football legacy of his family - which also includes his cousin Frank Lampard.

'I don't think they'll be footballers but they love sport,' he said,

He encourages other dads to spend time with their kids playing 'crazy golf' or having a kick around because 'those are the memories I have as a child', and admits he might have struggled if things had turned out differently.

He said: 'I was nervous if we'd had a little girl but thankfully, we have two boys.

'I'd love to have another one, but I'm not sure if we're too old for that.'

Although Louise, who's been married to the pundit for 18 years, shares her fashion forward designs on Instagram to her 151,000 followers, the fashionista doesn't have much of an input into Jamie's wardrobe as he also keeps up with the trends.

And he's been ahead of the curve with his love of a good beard for years.

He said: 'I haven't been clean shaven in about 10 years.

'Louise doesn't mind, if I have stubble or not actually, I'm lucky like that.'

But he'd never go too far with a bushy beard - 'it's that Shoreditch look I'm not quite in for that,' he laughed.
