'I didn't even get to say goodbye to the loyal listeners': Melbourne radio legend John Blackman - the 'voice' from Hey Hey It's Saturday - sacked from his breakfast show as soon as he came off air

  • Fans have call the radio legend's dismissal an 'appalling lack of respect'
  • Magic 1278 presenter Glenn Ridge will now host the new breakfast show

Broadcasting legend John Blackman has been axed from his breakfast radio role, being informed of the decision as he came off air.

He posted to his Facebook on Friday afternoon about the decision made by Magic 1278 and thanked listeners for their loyalty.

'Sadly, when I came off air at Magic 1278 this morning I was informed by management that my services hosting the Breakfast Session were no longer required,' he wrote.

'Because of the immediacy, I did not have an opportunity to say goodbye to the loyal bunch of listeners who stuck with me (and Jane) throughout the past 12 months.'

Stephen Beers, operations director at Magic 1278 and 3AW, has confirmed Mr Blackman would no longer be hosting the breakfast show.

'We have worked with John for a long time and hope to continue with other projects in future,' Mr Beers told the Herald Sun.

He added that Magic 1278 presenter Glenn Ridge will now host the new breakfast show.

Fans have responded the famed broadcasters announcement in outrage.

'What an appalling lack of respect and professional courtesy. You deserve so much better. You were the only reason I listened John and I enjoyed your relationship with Jane and the recent broadcasts with Wilbur Wilde were wonderfully entertaining,' wrote one fan.

Another added: 'What is it about the radio industry that does this, and has done it like this for decades? People called into the office and sacked, without warning, no time to find a new gig, no chance to wrap up and say bye to the listeners.'

Mr Blackman began his hosting role at Magic 1278 last year, working with Jane Holmes on the breakfast programme.

Ms Holmes announced in April this year that she was leaving the station after six years saying it was time 'to hang up my magic headphones.'
