Their mom may be a reality and fashion superstar and their dad a top rocker, but Sparrow and Harlow appreciate the simpler things in life.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden took their two children to the popular Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday.

The famous clan joined hundreds of eager tourists who visit the pier to enjoy food, rides and other beachside activities.

While in was a little cold for a change in LA on Wednesday, the foursome made the most of things rugging up so they could still enjoy the seaside carnival and other actives on the pier.

Their layered looks also helped Nicole and her famous family stay low key among the no doubt eager to spot a celebrity tourist crowd.

For their day at the pier, the 34-year-old designer donned a pair of skinny jeans with a grey sweater which she wore under a lather moto jacket.

The star accessorized the look by wrapping a zebra print scarf around her neck and throwing on and old baseball cap.

Following her let's-blend-in lead, was husband Joel who headed out in a pair of loose fit black jeans and a matching coaches jacket and sneakers.

Sparrow showed he has a genetic predisposition to being a rocker like his dad, with the six-year-old's hair cut into a mohawk.

While Sparrow went for a sporty look, Harlow added some colour to the family's ensembles.

The eight-year-old donned a pair of leopard print leggings, a checked skirt and a furry top.

The little girl - who also wore gold high tops - scored herself a birds-eye view of the pier, sitting on her dad's shoulders as they walked along.

While last year the couple were plagued with divorce rumours, they looked like the picture perfect family as they checked out the pier's sights.

The couple have been married since 2010.
