Riot Games Owner Tencent Introduces New Game Console In Asia

TGP_5F00_610

Image courtesy of Shenzhenware. At CES Asia (Consumer Electronics Show) in Shanghai, Chinese game company Tencent announced its new console the TGP (Tencent Games Platform) Box. The TGP Box uses a sixth generation Intel core processor while running both Windows 10 and a TGP Box mode. In this mode, the console can download and stream games, including League of Legends, FIFA Online 3, NBA 2K Online, Monster Hunter Online, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Tournament. Tencent hopes to bring plenty of third-party developed games later this year. Tencent, an investment holding company, is a major player in Asia's video game industry. This news becomes even more significant considering China had only just lifted its 15-year-long ban on console gaming last year. It's uncertain whether the TGP Box will eventually make its way to the West. Last year, Tencent became the owner of League of Legends developer Riot Games. In 2012, the company bought a minority stake in Epic Games. [Sou..

The Banner Saga 2 Arrives On Consoles This July

BannerSaga2_5F00_610

Only a month after its launch, Stoic Games has announced that The Banner Saga 2 will hit consoles in July. The sequel to the viking-themed RPG is currently available on PC and Mac, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions arriving July 26. The first Banner Saga arrived on consoles in January, two years after its original launch. In comparison, The Banner Saga 2 is hitting consoles much quicker than its predecessor. "Although our team size dictated what we could do with the first release, we knew that a two-year wait for the sequel was just not acceptable," said Stoic's technical director John Watson in a statement. "So we worked extremely hard to ensure that console gamers could continue their journey in a timely fashion." Stoic added that with its following game, The Banner Saga 3, it hopes to have a simultaneous launch on multiple platforms. For more on The Banner Saga 2, check out our review and our feature pointing out four reasons the game is better than its predecessor..

Reader Discussion: Do Late Reviews Affect Your Purchasing Decisions?

DoomE3Confirm-610

Many people use reviews to decide if a game is worth their time. In the current gaming climate, it's getting harder and harder to have reviews at launch due to day-one patches and online components, such as servers requiring testing under real-world conditions. Years ago, not having a review at launch made people suspicious that the publisher was trying to hide something, usually a less-than-stellar game, but that's not always the case. As we saw with The Division, being an online-only title, Ubisoft opted to wait because the game is meant to be played with a populated world - something impossible to create for the press only. Bethesda also decided not to let reviewers play Doom early, which is why our review is currently in progress. Reviews are meant to help the consumer make their purchasing decisions, which begs the question: How do late reviews affect whether or not your buy a game day one? Do you wait until the game is assessed by critics before buying it, or does it ..

Microsoft Ends Support For Project Spark, No Resulting Layoffs

ConkerProjSparkRD-610

Project Spark, Microsoft’s game creation suite for Xbox One and PC, is coming to an end. It was transitioned out of active development late last year and made entirely free, but now Microsoft is pulling the plug in full. As of today, the software is unavailable for download. As of August 12, all services will be pulled offline and user-generated content will be unretrievable. If you want to keep any content you or others have created, you’ll need to download it before then. There have been no layoffs associated with this decision, as many of the people working on Project Spark were transitioned to other projects. “This was an extremely difficult decision for our team that we do not take lightly,” writes community manager Thomas Gratz. “When ‘Project Spark’ transitioned away from active development last fall, many of our team members moved to other projects within Microsoft Studios. While this means there have been no layoffs at Microsoft, it also means it’s simply no longer feasible ..

Xbox One Backward Compatibility Can Now Accommodate Multi-Disc Games

masseffect2ps3review610

You might recall back when Xbox One backward compatibility was announced that there was a caveat. The Microsoft engineering team was having some trouble getting multi-disc games to play nicely. There’s been progress in that area, and those titles are now eligible for backward compatibility support. That means that Mass Effect 2 and 3, LA Noire, Max Payne 3, Lost Odyssey, and more can now be added to the library. “I can confirm that the BC team has done work to support multi disc scenarios,” wrote Xbox spokesperson Larry Hryb on Reddit. “Be sure to thank the BC engineers.” The first game supported under the updated technology is this week’s release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut. This also has impact on the monthly Games with Gold offerings, as all Xbox 360 games need to be available via backward compatibility on Xbox One. [Source: Reddit via Polygon] Our Take This is news I’ve been waiting for. There are some multi-disc games I missed last generation that I hope to re..

Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare Movement System Will Be Similar To Black Ops III

CODIWAnn-610

With Call of Duty helmed by three different studios and featuring different settings each year, there are inevitably going to be gameplay changes. 2015’s Black Ops III introduced a chain system that combines boosting, sliding, wall-running, and dashing. That will carry over to this year’s entry. In response to a question on Twitter, Infinity Ward had this to say about what players can expect from Infinite Warfare: @CODINT3L If you’ve played #BlackOps3 before, our take on the chain-based fluid movement system will feel natural to you. #InfiniteWarfare — Infinity Ward (@InfinityWard) May 13, 2016 Of course, this doesn’t prohibit Infinity Ward from making modifications or improvements. But players can at least know that if they’ve been honing their skills in Black Ops III, some of the techniques will carry over to this year’s game. For more on Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, check out our coverage from the reveal. It will be out on November 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. [Sou..

Blizzard Will Ban Cheaters On First Offense, No Exceptions

bastion_229_610

Blizzard has made a definitive statement on cheating in Overwatch. If you’re caught, you’re banned. The publisher issued a statement laying down the law with regard to hacks, bots, or any other third-party software that might provide a competitive edge. Players can report potential cheaters, but they should know that they won’t get a response or update on the investigation. "Not only does cheating undermine the spirit of fair play that all of our products are based on, but it works to diminish the fun and enjoyment of others," writes community manager "Lylirra." "While we are unlikely to publicly acknowledge when accounts are closed as a result of cheating or using unauthorized programs, we have and will continue to monitor Overwatch for exploitative behavior, as well as take action as needed to preserve the integrity of game." Additionally, Blizzard cautions that “Play of the Game” footage, highlights, and even spectator camera are imperfect and may not represent a player’s minute..
