Former Mahavishnu Orchestra bassist Rick Laird has been a successful corporate and freelance photographer for almost 30 years. Before that his noted jazz career had included extended stints with everyone from Wes Montgomery, Ben Webster and Buddy Rich through John McLaughlin’s legendary Mahavishnu and Chick Corea’s Return to Forever. Laird approached his historic subjects with more than just a photographer’s eye. He understood from deep personal experience the inner process that great musicians undertake in the creation of their art. He looked for that inner quality when he snapped the shutter. These are not staged journalistic shots. These are jazz portraits that capture the very essence of these legendary musicians as they were in performance and in life. Look at Elvin Jones, Ray Brown, Art Blakey, John McLaughlin and the other jazz greats. Richard Laird captured their life force as no other photographer ever has. Now Richard Laird has finally decided it is time to let the world see and own these remarkable images he has captured through the lens of a camera.
