The princess's Emanuel couture dress, which the press unfairly referred to as a 'horse-blanket' at the time, has a guide price of £10,000 to £15,000, while Madonna's controversial corset is estimated to fetch up to £35,000

The lead item in the auction, Diana's sparkling Catherine Walker gown, was ordered by Diana along with other pieces, before her state visit to Austria.

The Princess, who had enormous faith in the Walker's judgement, is said to have left the designer to choose an evening gown for the tour and did not even request provisional sketches.

Diana wore the glitzy number with a diamond and emerald choker necklace, which she had been given as a wedding present by H.M. The Queen Mother.

As well as the Vienna Burgtheater visit and the film premiere of 'Biggles', the Princess also wore the charity ball at Osterley House.

In a similar shade of green, but slightly more dress-down is Diana’s Emanuel couture tartan suit dress with a wide sailor collar, padded shoulders and a blouson-style box pleat at the back.

The wool ensemble, worn by Diana for her official visit to Italy with Prince Charles in May of 1985, is estimated to fetch £10,000 to £15,000.

The princess was photographed wearing it when she accompanied Prince Charles for a short gondola ride in Venice and later the same day when they collected the young William and Harry from the airport.

Charming photographs capture the Princess wearing the outfit whilst holding Prince Harry.

Diana teamed the outfit with a string of pearls, a simple white camisole, and a large peacock blue felt hat with folded back brim.

Elizabeth Emanuel has confirmed that only one outfit like this was ever made - for Diana, Princess of Wales.

The press at the time unkindly likened the ensemble to a 'horse blanket', which is possibly why it ended up in a high-end clothes resale shop in Hampshire.

The vendor purchased it from there in 1990 and was told by the shop keeper that the clothes had come to her via Susan Barrantes, mother of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

Accompanying the royal items in the auction is an iconic piece from the Queen of Pop.

Another music icon to feature in the auction is Bjork, whose Alexander McQueen ‘Kimono’ dress worn for the album cover of ‘Homogenic’ in 1997 is estimated to fetch £15,000- £25,000

Madonna’s Jean Paul Gaultier god lame stage ensemble, which she wore for her ‘Blond Amition’ tour in 1990, caused furore in the press at the time, but the infamous outfit is £25,000-£35,000.

The outrageous outfit with conical breast cups has curved top-stitched hip panels, gold laces front and back and matching knickers of nude elastine and gold lamé,

Madonna wore the outfit in the second 'Religious' phase of her concert, during which she provocatively sung 'Like A Virgin' whilst writhing on a red satin covered bed, accompanied by male dancers wearing cone bras.

She then covered the gold ensemble with a black robe and large crucifix and sung 'Like A Prayer', which caused a backlash from religious groups.

The piece also has 'MC' initialed in ink to the bodice, and the lot comes together with an autographed photograph of Madonna wearing the ensemble on tour.

Jean Paul Gaultier said of this special commission: 'When Madonna first called me in 1989, it was two days before my ready-to-wear show, and I thought my assistant was joking. I was a big fan.

'She asked me if I would do the tour. She knew what she wanted: a pinstripe suit and feminine corsetry.

'Madonna likes my clothes because they combine the masculine and the feminine.

'When I was a child, my grandmother took me to an exhibition, and they had a corset on display. I loved the flesh colour, the salmon satin, the lace.

'She explained that a corset was meant to help you, to make you stand up. It was a solution that I thought was beautiful. The gold conical bra was just an extension of that idea'.

Another music icon to feature in the auction is Bjork, whose Alexander McQueen ‘Kimono’ dress worn for the album cover of ‘Homogenic’ in 1997 is estimated to fetch £15,000- £25,000.

Bjork wanted to be depicted as a female warrior on the album cover.

At the time McQueen was working on his Givenchy couture ‘Eclect-Dissect’ collection, which was also filled with multi-cultural references including Japonism elements with similar kimono dresses, oriental embroidery and elaborate hairstyles redolent of Björk’s photographic portrait.

The dress for Björk was made as a special one-off in McQueen’s London studio and worn by the singer to create the hauntingly beautiful image for her album cover.

Kerry Taylor, Kerry Taylor Auctions says: 'The two Princess Diana pieces we have in this auction, although similar in colour, couldn’t be more different.

'The sea-green sequined evening gown by Catherine Walker, 1986 is full-on Hollywood glamour, and by far one of the more show-stopping, sultry pieces from her 1980s wardrobe.

'In stark contrast, the tartan wool day ensemble by the Emanuels is warm, practical and lady-like. She wore it in Venice when she accompanied Prince Charles for an official visit to Italy in 1985.

'Despite its more practical appearance, it is still very desirable and rare as examples of the Princess’s daywear, which does not often come onto the open market.'

Gemma Carver, Chief Marketing Officer of thesaleroom.com said: 'This auction is a unique opportunity for people to watch a piece of history sell to the highest bidder.'

The saleroom.com, which this year celebrates 10 years streaming live auctions, works with Europe’s leading auction houses and will be auctioning the items on June 14th.
