Positive Atheism is an independent journal published monthly by Cliff Walker, with the help of private donations.

Cliff Walker is a lifelong social activist and has worked exclusively on issues pertaining atheist dignity and atheist rights since September, 1988, when he served 24 days in jail for having refused a court order to undergo religious instruction in a sequestered faith-based rehabilitation program.

Dedicated to the discussion of atheistic philosophy, ethics, and history, Positive Atheism, as she currently exists, was established on October 4, 1998, but the magazine dates back to August, 1995, with the web site following shortly thereafter. Upon her independence in November, 1998, Positive Atheism quickly began to emphasize a struggle against antiatheist bigotry, currently seeking to discover ways in which atheists might behave that would serve to reduce or eliminate both the instances and the effects of this bigotry. Forced to slow down due to severe illness in 2002, we began rethinking the very definition of the words atheism and atheist, with an eye toward reducing the individual atheist's stigma within society, starting at home in the United States and spanning to wherever else this beast may rear its ugly head.

Positive Atheism is not the Critical Thinker renamed, but a new work. References to the Critical Thinker are inevitable because it contained much of Cliff's work. Back-issues of any publications edited by Cliff are always available through him.

Positive Atheism was funded at first with Cliff Walker's personal income. Donations now pay for a substantial portion of the costs, though with the tremendous increase in traffic to the web site, those costs continue to rise.

We had hoped to become fully self-supporting through subscription donations. But when illness and accident struck, Cliff was forced to stop the complex and demanding task of publishing a monthly print journal. Now we merely seek donations, with no promise of a subscription. If we return to publishing we will contact those who have donated to see if they wish to be on our second charter list. That's all we can promise at this time -- and we frankly admit that the web project may be all that's in store for our future. Sorry.

In short: We no longer "sell" subscriptions (we never did, actually). If you wish to donate, fine. If and when we do start publishing, those donors who request subscriptions will receive copies as if they subscribed.

Without the subscription renewals, our income came to a screeching halt, forcing Cliff to pay ALL the bills out of his household budget and forcing PAM to compete with Cliff's new expenses of making his home handicapped accessible, learning an entirely new way to cook specialized meals, purchasing both the groceries and the equipment needed to prepare those meals, paying (full price) for medication and physical rehabilitation, and hiring workers to do some fo the chores Cliff is no longer strong enough to do himself. Guess which items win when push comes to shove!

Please send e-mail to the address shown on our front page to inquire. Although we can no longer answer each and every letter, we do read those that have been written to us (that is, those that are not simply copies of copyrighted material: sermons, scriptures, religious tracts, etc, all of which get deleted as soon as we discern what they are -- and not a moment later). Every winter we ask our online friends and family to send us an ornament from your tree. Perhaps this year we can finally outgrow the tiny one that's lived on the shelf above the PAM computer for several years. Since we do not celebrate any particular day, feel free to wait until it's time to pack them away. Here is the mailing address:
