Gasly claims pole for Barcelona GP2 opener
13 May 2016 – Red Bull junior Pierre Gasly opened his 2016 account with pole position for GP2 Series newcomers Prema during qualifying for the first round of the year in Spain.
Following a brief threat of rain early in the session Gasly blitzed his rivals with a time of 1:27.807, finishing almost half a second clear of compatriot Norman Nato.
DAMS will lock out the second row of the grid with Williams youngster Alex Lynn third and Renault test driver Nicholas Latifi in fourth spot.
Renault youngster Sergey Sirotkin was fifth for ART Grand Prix, ahead of Gustav Malja (Rapax) and Oliver Rowland (MP Motorsport).
McLaren development driver Nobuharu Matsushita was eighth after encountering traffic on his hot lap, while Artem Markelov and rookie Luca Ghiotto rounded out the top 10.
