Rooney Mara was spotted out in New York with her newly dyed platinum tresses on Tuesday.

The former brunette opted to go silver last month, a trend that Vanity Fair predicted will be the look of the summer.

The 31-year-old achieved her lighter look with the help of her Los Angeles-based colourist Cassondra Kaeding, according to Refinery29.com.

Rooney smoothed her hair up into a top knot as she strolled along with a pair of dark glasses covering her eyes.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo actress wore a heavy blue and green plaid shirt over a black T-shirt with a graphic design on the front, plus black leggings and black canvas sneakers.

She slung a khaki bag over her shoulder and kept herself entertained by listening to something on her smart phone via ear buds.

There was no sign of her beau of six years, director Charlie McDowell. The 32-year-old is the son of English actor Malcolm McDowell and American actress Mary Steenburgen.

The couple have recently wrapped filming on Charlie's next movie, Discovery, which he is directing from a script he co-wrote.

Rooney co-stars with Robert Redford, Riley Keough and Jason Segal in the love story set a year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified. The love story is due out next year.
