Feeling the pressure? Chris Evans tries to put on a brave face as he leaves the Radio 2 building after Top Gear is slated by viewers

His new show has been roundly panned by viewers, leaving him to defend his latest television offering.

But Chris Evans attempted to put on a brave face as he left Radio 2 in central London following his breakfast talk show on Friday.

The 50-year-old had welcomed a host of stars including Will Poulter and the Manic Street Preachers, who performed live on air.

Chris wore a relaxed outfit and emerged wearing a blue London Marathon top and navy driving trousers, with a pair of red trainers.

He completed his look with a pair of oversized sunglasses on the bright day and a cap that matched his all blue ensemble.

In a jovial mood, the presenter made faces as he left and was clearly happy to pose and joke around in front of photographers - despite the controversy surrounding Top Gear.

Actor Will Poulter, who had been interviewed about his role in critically acclaimed film The Revenant, appeared in high spirits outside the studio.

Wearing skinny jeans, a blue T-shirt and a dark jacket the young star waved to fans as he listened to music before entering the building.

Manic Street Preachers lead singer James Dean Bradfield was also spotted and appeared in a thoughtful mood.

He rocked a dressed down look comprising grey jeans and a bright red shirt under a khaki utility jacket.

Chris' latest public appearance comes after his revamped Top Gear series, which debuted this Sunday with co host Matt LeBlanc, was roundly criticised - one person labelled the pair as 'nauseating'.

But it has been reported that BBC chiefs have offered Top Gear host LeBlanc 'a fortune' to sign up for a second series despite the criticism.

A source told the Sun that LeBlanc, 48, is 'crucial' for the show's success as Chris is 'not known around the world'.

While both hosts were criticised for their performances, LeBlanc was viewed positively by many viewers, with some dubbing him the better presenter.

One fan tweeted: 'Matt LeBlanc is the best thing about the show. He deserves his own car show that isn't living in the shadow of its former self. #TopGear'.

However Evans' performance was subject to scathing reviews, with viewers saying he was 'over the top' and 'annoying'.

The much-vaunted Sunday night programme was watched by an average of 4.3million people  - peaking at 4.7million - compared to the 5.3million who watched the final episode starring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

Many viewers said they preferred the lesser-promoted spin-off show Extra Gear to the main programme fronted by Evans and LeBlanc.

A poll ran by motoring magazine TrackCar Performance found more than 80 percent of viewers preferred the spin-off - which was the fifth most-watched show on iPlayer yesterday morning - fronted by lesser-known presenters Rory Reid and Chris Harris.

Clarkson, May and Hammond stayed silent on Twitter as the episode aired, but Clarkson's daughter Emily tweeted: 'Nope. Not even a little bit convinced'.

And earlier this week, Evans hit out at critics on social media.

He tweeted on Monday: 'The new Top Gear is a hit. OFFICIALLY. 23% audience share. 12% MORE than the opening episode of the last series. These are the FACTS.'

The star's next post said: 'Top Gear audience grew throughout the hour. FACT. Won its slot. FACT. Still number one on i Player. FACT. These are THE FACTS folks.'
