Secret Tudor castle at centre of planning row is finally demolished

The mock Tudor 'castle' thought to have been worth in the region of £1million is just a pile of rubble after Robert Fidler, of Surrey, obeyed a court order to demolish it rather than face jail. He had managed to conceal the construction of his striking home in 2000 by hiding it behind a wall of hay bales on his farm in Salfords. However, once Reigate and Banstead Borough Council discovered the building - which was put up without planning permission on green belt land - the farmer was ordered to knock it down. That was nine years ago - and the once-grand home has now finally been razed after Mr Fidler, a 67-year-old grandfather of 11, was threatened with a prison sentence.

Michael Gove twists the knife into his friend David Cameron over EU

Michael Gove urged voters not to listen to 'sneering' elites as he made the case for Brexit during the second Sky News special programme ahead of the EU referendum. The Justice Secretary dismissed dire warnings about recession and job losses from organisations such as the Treasury and International Monetary Fund, saying the public was 'sick' of getting told what to do. He said the EU was a 'job destroying machine' and insisted taxpayers' money should be going to the NHS rather than 'invincibly arrogant' Eurocrats. Mr Gove also condemned David Cameron for 'scare' tactics during his appearance in the first of the televised events last night. Both the Remain and Leave camps are hoping the debates in the last three weeks of the referendum battle can swing the vote their way.

How the hanging of a woman who killed her violent husband inspired Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy was haunted as 16-year-old after watching Martha Brown, 45, hang after killing her husband who had abused her for years. So struck was Hardy by this lasting memory of Martha that she became the inspiration for his penultimate novel, Tess Of The D'Urbervilles. When that much-loved classic was first published in 1892, it became an instant bestseller with its themes of frustrated love and unfair treatment of women. These recur throughout Hardy's writings and resonated all too tragically in the real-life story of Martha Brown.
