Gordon Ramsay may be on the mend after surgery on his foot – but he is still getting plenty of pain over his plans to build a multi-million pound holiday home.

The chef has caused outrage among residents in the seaside village of Rock, in Cornwall, with his plans to demolish a 1920s property he bought for £4.4million last year.

Ramsay, 49, who was pictured yesterday returning to his London home after an operation to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, wants to replace the art deco property with a five-bedroomed whitewashed mansion boasting a zinc facade and wood cladding.

The new house, which will have two kitchens, a swimming pool, a wine cellar and four en suite bathrooms, will be around 100 yards from the beach.

But Ramsay also wants to build a three-bedroom grass-covered boathouse just a stone’s throw from water at high tide.

Residents fear this new property, which Ramsay wants to call the Garden House, will be visible along the Camel Estuary coastline in the enclave known as ‘Kensington-On-Sea’ because of wealthy interlopers with large holiday homes in the area.

He has applied to Cornwall Council for planning permission to knock down the old house and build the two new ones.

Neighbours have already attacked the controversial proposals, and further evidence of their anger has emerged in formal objections submitted to the council. One neighbour, Victoria Savile, wrote: ‘As a property owner also on Porthilly beach, I am very concerned about this development which I believe will destroy the area.

‘I urge you to insist that this house is not bulldozed and its facade be maintained or at least some of its character be retained rather than the shortsighted house which is currently proposed. The house is one of the nicest traditional beach front properties – part of the charm of Rock.

‘I think the councillors owe it to the region to preserve some of its heritage in accordance with the local plan. Were it not such a special house or prime visible beach frontage this may not be the case.

‘Down the line the council will come to regret having allowed such traditional houses to be destroyed with impunity.’

Ramsay, who recently announced that his wife Tana, 41, was expecting their fifth child, was due to play for the Rest of the World XI against an England XI as part of the charity event Soccer Aid.

But he was forced to pull out of the fundraiser, being played at Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground on Sunday, after he was told that he needed emergency surgery to fix the tear in his ruptured Achilles tendon.

A spokesman for Ramsay said: ‘Gordon, Tana and the whole Ramsay family are very much looking forward to spending time in their new home in Cornwall.

‘They are committed to contributing to, and delighted to be investing in, the future of the Cornish community they will hopefully be a part of for many happy years to come.’
