‘New day': Demi Lovato plays with pigs as she returns to social media after announcing split from Wilmer Valderrama

After six years together, Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama revealed the end of their relationship with a joint statement on Friday night.

And 23-year-old Demi celebrated the start of a 'new day' on Saturday, as she took to social media for the first time since the announcement.

Sharing images of her morning on Snapchat, the singer played with the mini pet pigs and enjoyed a coffee on a rooftop overlooking Hollywood.

While it was unclear if the pigs belonged to Demi or a friend, she has previously stated that she would love to own one of the animals.

During her time on the U.S. version of X Factor  back in 2012, she joked with the audience that she hoped to one day get a pig and name it Simon - after show boss Cowell.

'I have always wanted one of those small pigs,' she said at the time. 'The ones you can keep as pets. They are just so cute and little.'

And Demi certainly seemed to be enjoying the company of the intelligent animals as she relaxed on Saturday morning.

The singer posted a series of black and white images to her Snapchat account, without comment.

It came just hours after she buried her great-grandmother, and later the same day announced the end of her romance with 36-year-old actor Wilmer.

'After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship,' it said.

'This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, be we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends.

'We will always be supportive of each other.' 

And the pair thanked fans, saying: 'Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.' 

The couple raised eyebrows over their 13-year age difference when they began dating when Demi was just 18.

But she has previously praised the former That 70s Show star for supporting her through multiple trips to rehab for addiction issues.

The pair often posed loved-up selfies on Instagram.

However, they looked somber as they stepped out together in Los Angeles on May 24, the last time they were seen together in public.

DEMI AND WILMER'S LOVE STORY: 

The former couple met in 2010 at a shoot for Voto Latino

Shortly afterwards, Demi was admitted to rehab for drug abuse and an eating disorder

Supportive partner Wilmer stayed by her side and she credits him for saving her life

Pair were said to have split for a short time in 2012

Started being more active as a couple on social media in 2014

Sparked engagement rumours in February 2016

And earlier this year, Demi denied that they were engaged but told Ellen DeGeneres that she wouldn't say no to a proposal.

'I don't see a ring. I wouldn't mind if I saw one!' she joked. 

The split comes at a difficult time for Demi, who is mourning the loss of her great-grandmother and attended her 'Mimaw's' funeral earlier on Friday. 

'Even the sky is crying today,' she wrote.

Demi is gearing up for her Future Now tour with Nick Jonas.

Wilmer has signed on to guest star on Grey's Anatomy, and also is filming a new military family drama for CBS.
