'I miss your hugs': Bindi Irwin pens gushing farewell message to American boyfriend Chandler Powell as she returns from a three-week trip to the US

She has been on a romantic American adventure with her boyfriend for the past three weeks.

Now it is time for Bindi Irwin to return to Australia, but not before she gushed about her beau Chandler Powell to her Instagram followers.

‘Three weeks of adventure everywhere from LA to the Oregon Coast. I miss your puns and hugs but I'll see you again in a couple months. I hope your trip to Kansas is wonderful,’ she wrote.

Bindi also posted a black and white snap of the couple, in which they are seen snuggling against a heavily filtered background, a marina filled with fishing boats.

Bindi closes her eyes as she burrows her head into Chandler’s shoulder while he holds her close with his arm around her back, looking at her lovingly.

The 17-year-old daughter of late environmentalist Steve Irwin needed a few takes to get the photo right as the couple kept laughing while her brother Robert, 12, took the snap.

‘Having a [boat] load of laughs trying to take “serious” photos,’ Chandler wrote on his Instagram, using a boat emoticon, next to a photo his friend Luke Reavley took of Robert trying to get the shot.

Bindi has been dating American pro wakeboarder Chandler, 19, since last July, and almost a year on the teenage lovebirds appear more smitten than ever.

The farewell message was just the latest in a series of gushing posts about how much she was enjoying spending time with her boyfriend.    

Last Tuesday, she watched Chandler surf at the beach at sunrise and wrote in part of her caption that her life was 'perfect.'

'Mornings like this with my sunshine,' Bindi began. 

'Watching him surf and seeing whales in the distance, life is pretty much perfect.'

In the image, Chandler wears a wet suit and carries his surfboard as he clambers over rocks on the beach.

Bindi didn't just post about her boyfriend, as she spent plenty of time taking in the sights of the American west coast and playing with its wildlife.

On Saturday, she shared a photo of herself cuddling a skunk in a nature park in Grants Pass, Oregon.

'Spending time with some gorgeous rescued and rehabilitated sweethearts like this beauty. Okay, skunks are my newest favourites,' she wrote.

The holiday included her and Chandler attending the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner at the JW Marriott in Los Angeles last month.

The gala helped to honour the late Steve's memory, with Steve being Bindi's father, who died in 2006 after a stingray attack.  

Also in attendance was Robert and their mother Terri, 51.

It was recently revealed that Chandler has been familiar with Bindi's family long before they started dating.

His grandfather told Woman's Day magazine that Chandler Idolised Steve growing up.

'Chandler used to watch Steve Irwin's TV show all the time as a kid,' the his granddad, John DiCenzo said. 

John also said Chandler once threw a wildlife-themed party for his friends and was 'devastated' when Steve died.
