David Cameron is taken to task for his immigration record on EU referendum debate

The Prime Minister was repeatedly battered over immigration levels by a live studio audience as he insisted that cutting ties with Brussels was a 'bad way' to cut numbers. Father-of-three Harry Boparai (pictured centre) raged that he could not find a GP or buy a house and his children had to sleep in one room. But Mr Cameron argued that his much-mocked renegotiation deal could bring down net migration - which has been running at a near-record of 333,000 a year. The clashes came as the premier appeared in an ITV referendum special that also featured Nigel Farage (left), who was taken to task by Tola Jaiyeola (inset) over his attitude to migrants.

Jose Mourinho and Chelsea agree estimated pay-off with Eva Carneiro

The former Chelsea manager (left) acted to silence 'scandalous' sexism allegations minutes before Dr Eva Carneiro (right) was due to go public with them. Mourinho and the West London club agreed a pay-off estimated to be worth £5million to Dr Carneiro, who claims he branded her a 'daughter of a whore' and a woman who did not understand football after she ran on to the pitch to treat an injured player. Last night Chelsea issued a grovelling apology to the 42-year-old - who had turned down the club's initial £1.2million offer - but Mourinho pointedly did not say sorry. The huge deal was struck as Dr Carneiro prepared to take the witness stand to make further explosive claims. She had threatened to expose embarrassing texts and emails about her time working for the 'Special One', now manager at Manchester United. Chelsea's lawyers had called her allegations 'scandalous, irrelevant and untrue'. But as the case was due to resume at London South Employment Tribunal in Croydon yesterday afternoon, the settlement was hammered out in a corridor.

North Shields schoolgirls admit kidnapping 2-year-old toddler from Primark store

The schoolgirls (pictured attending an earlier court hearing) were originally charged with kidnap 'with the intention of committing a sexual offence' but this was 'discontinued' at a youth court today and the girls admitted an alternative charge of kidnap. It can now be reported that the two-year-old girl was the second child they had tried to grab from the Primark store in Newcastle that day, having tried unsuccessfully to trick another little girl's mother. The teenagers, aged 13 and 14, admitted leading the second toddler away from the store and taking her to a park three miles away. The pair were arrested an hour and 45 minutes after they led the confused little girl away from the store in busy Northumberland Street. They were deliberately targeting black children. It was also said at a previous hearing in April that a tablet computer was found containing searches for 'rape', 'people getting raped', 'young people getting raped' and 'poor little thing getting kidnapped and raped'. But a source said there was not enough evidence to proceed with the kidnap charge with a sexual element.

Koebner, who founded the non-profit chimpanzee sanctuary Chimp Haven in Louisiana, spent four years teaching the chimps how to be wild in southern Florida after they were released from the hepatitis research lab where they lived (bottom right). She then returned to the enclosure and was greeted with open arms by the chimps, which was captured on camera and featured on the PBS documentary The Wisdom of the Wild.
