Beam me up... Sulu: Star Trek fans invited to join George Takei on a zero-gravity flight

  • Twenty guests will join the actor to celebrate Star Trek's 50th anniversary
  • The flight will take place on a G-Force One, a modified Boeing 727 aircraft
  • Lucky ticket holders will get a Zero-G flight suit and photos of the event

It's not quite going boldly where no one has gone before, but it's probably the closest to feeling like you're on the Star Ship Enterprise you'll ever get.

This summer is Star Trek's 50th anniversary and to mark the occasion actor George Takei, who played Captain Hikaru Sulu, is letting 20 guests join him on a zero-gravity flight.

The weightless adventure will be taking place on G-Force One, a modified Boeing 727, to celebrate the beloved TV series.

The Boeing 727 will see Takei and the lucky guests flying around the aircraft, which 'uses parabolic arcs to make achieving weightlessness easier than accelerating to warp one', the speed system notably used by spacecraft in the franchise.

The organisers said: 'At the top of each arc anything is possible, such as perfecting the moonwalk, flying effortlessly through the air or flipping like an Olympic gymnast.

'After a brief encounter with Martian and lunar gravities, flyers will experience true weightlessness and an exhilarating freedom from Earth's pull.'

The flying experience will take place in Las Vegas on August 4, almost 50 years after the airing of Star Trek's pilot episode.

Each ticket is $6,500 (£4,458), plus a five per cent tax, and will include a certificate of weightless completion and the chance to chat with the actor during a meet and greet prior to launch.

'This is perhaps the closest any fan will ever get to actually boarding the USS Enterprise and boldly going where so few have gone before with the one and only Hikaru Sulu, aka George Takei,' said Rod Roddenberry, who created the Star Trek series.

Terese Brewster, President and COO of Zero-G, said: 'Weightless flights with Zero-G are already spectacular on their own, but having George Takei on board makes it a truly special experience.

'This will be an extraordinary opportunity for people to feel like they are in space while sharing that experience with someone who helped ignite our fascination for space exploration.'
