Move over duck face! The 'wrist-grab' is the latest red carpet trend for male A-listers including Justin Bieber and Kanye West (and why you should AVOID following suit)

  • Trend sees male stars grabbing one wrist with the other hand
  • Justin Bieber and model Lucky Blue Smith have made it signature pose
  • Was Orlando Bloom 's go-to stance during Cannes film festival in May
  • Tom Hiddleston, Joel Edgerton and Kanye West have also tried it out

While their female counterparts have duck face, fish gape and T-Red hands, male celebrities, it seems, are not far behind when it comes to a signature red carpet stance pose.

Rather than hands clasped behind the back or hanging idly at the side, it sees the star grabbing one wrist with the other hand.

Celebrities from singers Justin Bieber and Kanye West to actors Tom Hiddleston and Orlando Bloom have all been spotted doing the wrist grab on the red carpet.

As well as solving the age old problem of where to place your hands while posing, it's also a handy way to show off a designer watch.

It's become so popular that some stars, particularly Justin Bieber, are rarely seen doing anything else as they pose for the camera.

But body language expert Robin Kermode, one of Europe’s leading communication coaches and the founder of Zone2, a professional training and coaching consultancy, said it's not advisable to follow the star's lead.

'The "emotional centre" of human beings is the lower stomach - the gut - which is why we are often tempted to cover or protect it with our hands.

'The ‘wrist clasp’ however is a bit of an odd one to me. It looks closed and defensive – almost like night club bouncer.

WRIST GRAB ALTERNATIVES

There are only four ways to place your hands if you aren’t holding on to someone else, according to Robin Kermode.

1. Hands behind your back: This can look a bit military, formal and locked in position.

2. Hands in pockets: Both hands in pockets looks rude, and if we don’t show our hands it’s a sign that we’re hiding something. One hand in pocket however is a pretty good way to look relaxed.

3. Hands held lightly in front: Holding hands about normal belt height is the pose of most TV presenters and politicians. It looks emotionally open but still makes the person feel safe.

4. Hands hanging by your side: This looks open and relaxed and is known as ‘actor’s neutral’. Watch a stage play and actors do this all the time. It takes a lot of confidence as your emotional centre is exposed, but most people on the red carpet should be confident enough for this pose.

'Also if the clasp is held too low it can look like men are protecting their privates which is not a good look for a movie star.'

One repeat offender is pop superstar Justin Bieber whose made it his signature red carpet pose while arriving at awards ceremonies and has not yet picked up a gong to keep his hands occupied.

The singer teamed his wrist grab with his most serious and brooding pose at the American Music Awards, the MTV Europe Music Awards in Milan and the MTV Video Music Awards in LA in 2015 to name just a few.

If proof were needed of its popularity, an Instagram photo of basketball players Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and LeBron James shows all four doing a wrist grab pose in a photo celebrating their friendship.

Singer John Mayer is also well known for his liaisons with A-list women including Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and Taylor Swift.

However, when he turned up in a cardigan doing the wrist grab at the opening of the Audemars Piguet Rodeo Drive store in LA it gave the lothario an unexpected air of innocence.

At the recent Cannes film festival the pose was out in force amongst male actors at a variety of glittering events.

Warrior and Star Wars actor Joel Edgerton showed it off during a photocall for the film Loving.

And Brit actor Orlando Bloom made it something of a signature pose throughout the festival.

His fellow British star, Tom Hiddleston may well bring the wrist grab to the big screen if he lands the coveted role of James Bond.

He was spotted doing it on the red carpet at the TV BAFTAS last month in a 007 style tuxedo, while actor Luke Wilson tried it out at the Roadies' TV series premiere in LA earlier this month.

Utah-born model-of-the-moment Lucky Blue Smith, 18, is such a fan of the wrist grab that it's a wonder his hands haven't got stuck that way.

Unfortunately in Orlando's case, adopting the pose while walking made him look as if he was worried about being caught short.

It's wasn't the only time the Lord of The Rings star was seen rocking the pose during the film festival.

STARS' RED CARPET POSES

Fish gape: The pose involves sucking the cheeks in and keeping the lips ever so slightly apart. Keira Knightley is a big fan.

Duck Face: Involves poufing up the lips and make the wearer appear sexually alluring with an exaggerated pout or smooch. Selfie lovers such as Lauren Goodger show it off on social media.

T-Rex hands: Identified by beauty blogger Huda, it  involves artfully holding the hands near the face, placed on the chin or on the hair, or even on the head with gently curled fingers. It's a favourite with Kylie Jenner.

He posed on the red carpet at the Harmonist Party at Martinez beach doing the wrist grab.

Perhaps it was his way of showing off the colourful beaded bracelet on his left wrist.

Having modelled for Tom Ford, Versace and Michael Kors, working with photographers such Annie Liebovitz and Mario Sorrenti, he's certainly ahead of the curve.

Of course Anna Wintour's MET Gala in New York last month was the ideal opportunity to rock out the on-trend pose.

Lucky Blue was looking even more bejewelled at the BRIT Awards earlier this year, dressed in a vibrant red jacket, and made sure to display his best wrist grab.

And the Elle Style Awards at Tate Britain in February also afforded him the same opportunity.

At amfAR's 23rd Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes last month he used the wrist grab to show off his impressive collection of rings.
