Queensland have been hit by a major blow to their State of Origin hopes after Cooper Cronk suffered an injury just five days before the first game.

Cronk rolled his ankle during Maroons training on Friday and is now a huge doubt for the clash against New South Wales in Sydney on June 1.

The Melbourne Storm halfback attempted to shrug off the injury during the session at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast as the Maroons build-up for the start of their defence of the title.

But he was then forced to call for medical assistance and was taken off the field on a buggy for further checks.

Queensland coach Kevin Walters later admitted: 'He's in doubt. His ankle swelled up like a balloon.

'We will get some scans as soon as we can and go from there. It is disappointing for Cooper.

'You want these things to go as smoothly as possible, but we will get on with it.'

Michael Morgan is now an option to come into Queensland's starting line-up alongside Johnathan Thurston, although Daly Cherry-Evans has now been put on standby and could earn a shock call.

Cherry-Evans, who played in the second game of last year's Origin series when Queensland lost 26-18, was only set to be at Friday's training session as part of a team providing some decent opposition to the current squad.

In the end he didn't make it because his flight from Sydney was heavily delayed due to strong winds, but will now stay on the Gold Coast until the Maroons get the results back from Cronk's scans.

But coach Walters added: 'We will give Cooper every chance to prove his fitness - he's a good healer.'

Queensland have won 12 out of 16 Origin games that Cronk has played in since he made his debut back in 2010.
