Would YOU live in the 'haunted' Amityville Horror house? Home where six family members were brutally murdered goes on sale for $850K

  • A Long Island man murdered his parents and four siblings inside the home
  • Family that moved in after the 1974 murders reported 'paranormal activity'
  • Spooky tales from inside home inspired book and film 'Amityville Horrors'
  • But broker says the ghost stories are known locally as noting but a 'hoax'
  • 'The only horror about this house was that a family was murdered,' he said

A real estate ad for a house on 108 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York describes it as a 'stately center hall colonial' with a formal dining room, but makes no mention of the mass murder that took place there in 1974.

The owner of the house that became the scene of the 'Amityville Horror' killings wants $850,000 for the property, according to the advertisement

For that price, a potential buyer will get a five-bedroom, four-bathroom house with a 'large boat house' and a two-car garage - as well as a piece of Long Island true-crime history.

The murders that made the house famous occurred on November 13, 1974, and left killer Ronald DeFeo's mother, father, and four siblings dead. Police found them shot in their beds.

DeFeo later said voices in the house made him kill his family, and his lawyers used that claim in a failed insanity defense.

He was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences and is currently serving time at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York, with a parole hearing scheduled for June 2017, the New York Daily News reported.

A family that moved into the house after the murders claimed they experienced paranormal activity in the house - mysterious events that included odors, inexplicable sounds, and a chilling cold that defied the warm glow of a fireplace.

Their spooky tales inspired the 1977 book 'The Amityville Horrors,' which became a film in 1979.

Broker Jerry O'Neil told the Daily News he is aware of the house's history, but that he nevertheless thinks 'it is a beautiful home.'

He said locals refer to the claims of paranormal activity in the house as the 'Amityville hoax.'

'The only horror about this house was that a family was murdered,' he said.
