Bangkok beats Barcelona, New York and Malaga as the best value city: The cost of the most popular holidays for Brits revealed

  • Cost of a week in destinations favoured by British travellers are calculated
  • Bangkok is the cheapest, costing about £838 per person, including flights
  • New York will set you back over £2,000 with its hotels costing the most

You're better off in Bangkok than Barcelona if your chasing a sunshine break that offers good value for money, a new study has found.

Research has revealed just how much trips to ten of the most popular destinations in the world could cost Brits.

A stay in the Thai capital could total as little as £838 a week, which is largely down to the low prices of its hotels, which are the cheapest of the top 10 destinations. But the equivalent break in New York, one of the most expensive holiday spots in the world, sets holidaymakers back £2,205 on average.

The results were revealed by Kayak, who looked at the cost of a week's holiday in 10 of the most popular destinations around the world for Brits.

Included in the costings were return flights, a week's accommodation (in a three-star and four-star hotel) and car hire, six meals, one city or museum tour, three cocktails and a novelty souvenir.

They found that although Alicante is much closer to the UK than Thailand, a week in the Spanish city costs £43 more compared to Bangkok.

New York 580 1,123 307 135 30 27 3 2,205

This is largely thanks to the cost of a week's hotel stay in the Thai capital, which is the cheapest of the 10 destinations.

Palma de Mallorca has the cheapest flights from the UK but the hotels are comparatively more expensive, meaning that a week on the island could cost Brits more than £1,000 per person.

However, for travellers planning a driving holiday, Spanish destinations are proving to be some of the best value for money.

Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Malaga are all cheaper for car hire than any of the non-Spanish destinations featured - although this does not factor in the cost of petrol.

Alicante, Palma de Mallorca and Malaga also have some of the cheapest cocktails at just £15 for three.

New York is the priciest destination for a week's holiday, with a week in a three-star hotel costing an average of £2,205.

Although the most expensive flights are to Orlando, New York tops the expensive list for just about everything else - especially when it comes to hotels.

Perhaps surprisingly, the average cost of souvenirs, in this case a fridge magnet, is about the same whether you're in Asia, Europe or North America.

Faro has the most expensive fridge magnet at £5 but prices elsewhere average out at between £2 and £3.

Kayak also looked at the difference in holiday prices according to whether someone is staying in a three-star or four-star hotel.

The biggest price jump from staying in a three-star and a four-star hotel is in Faro where staying in a fancier hotel could cost you £480 more per week.
