'You broke the mold': Katy Perry leads the way as celebrities take to social media after Hillary Clinton claims historic victory

Katy Perry led the parade of celebrities who took to social media on Tuesday to celebrate Hillary Clinton becoming the first female major party presidential nominee.

'A lot of little girls are in bed right now dreaming for the first time, without limits. You broke the mold @HillaryClinton,' Perry, 31, tweeted to her nearly 90 million followers on Twitter.

Clinton, 68, claimed victory in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination after primary wins in New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, three of the six states that voted on Tuesday.

Cher, 60, tweeted that she had tears as Clinton became the presumptive nominee.

'SAY WHAT YOU WILL...THE CHICK'S A WARRIOR,' Cher added.

The Real Housewives Of New York City star Dorinda Medley also took to social media to express herself.

'Can't help but feel awfully #proud tonight. Not only as a #woman and as a #Democrat, but as an #American. #ImWithHer #Hillary,' she tweeted.

Elizabeth Banks tweeted that she was 'very emotional' about Clinton and called it a 'historic moment for American Women.'

Angela Bassett, 57, tweeted her support for Clinton while also acknowledging the late US Representative Shirley Chisholm who in 1968 was the first black woman elected to Congress.

Chisholm also ran for the presidency in 1972 as the first major-party black candidate and the first woman to seek the Democratic Party's nomination.

Olivia Munn, 35, also noted the signifance in a tweet.

'Regardless of your political beliefs, it's pretty damn awesome to have a woman on the ballot for President,' she wrote.

Jane Fonda, 78, also tweeted her support for Clinton upon learning she'd clinched the nomination.

'I've known Hillary since the 90s when she wanted to talk to me about the challenges of raising a child as a famous woman. She's as intimate and personable as can be and she'll make a real difference on so many levels,' Fonda tweeted.
