Iron Man hanging with Spider-Man! Robert Downey Jr. and Tobey Maguire savor a superheroes day out in sunny LA

Robert Downey Jr. is better known as his alter ego Iron Man while Tobey Maguire played Spider-Man in the not-too-distant past.

The guys made a curious superhero duo as they enjoyed a walk down trendy Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, California on Wednesday.

Robert, 51, and Tobey, 40, may have been discussing various movie projects or, just a hope, perhaps one together, for they seemed deep in conversation.

The former was even seen chewing on his fingernail at one point during the stroll while Tobey looked thoughtful behind a full beard and dark shades.

Both were casually dressed with Robert clad in baggy blue track trousers and a graphic print top with high top trainers and baseball cap.

Robert wore no sunglasses to shield his eyes from the sunshine but as Los Angeles has been under a grey cloud lately the glare was probably a welcome sight.

Tobey opted for black loose fitting jeans and a plain, dark grey T-shirt with white trainers.

They were joined by another pal who trailed close behind them as they crossed the busy intersection.

The two actors starred in the 2000 comedy drama Wonder Boys co-starring Michael Douglas, and Tobey had an uncredited cameo in the 2008 satirical action comedy Tropic Thunder in which Robert, Ben Stiller and Jack Black had starring roles.

It's not unusual to see these guys hug it out on the red carpet whenever they see one another.

Robert is wed to producer Susan Levin, with whom he has two children, a son, Exton, four, and a daughter, Avri, one and a half. (He also has a 22-year-old son, Indio, from a previous marriage to Deborah Falconer.)

Tobey is wed to jewellry designer Jennifer Meyer and they have two children, daughter Ruby, nine, and son Otis, seven.

Robert and Tobey both have something else in common - sobriety.

Robert maintains he has been drug-free since 2003, as he told The Guardian, crediting his wife, Susan, friends, the 12-step program and yoga for his success,

Tobey has been sober since age 19 after experiencing 'some difficulty' in his late teen years, as he told The Belfast Telegraph.

Robert, meanwhile, will soon be putting on the Iron Man suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming, now in pre-production.

The Golden Globe winner and two-time Oscar nominee will join forces with Tom Holland, who assumes the title role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Holland, 20, was introduced to audiences as the Marvel Comics superhero in this year's Captain America: Civil War, which also starred Downey Jr. as Iron Man.

The Billy Elliot the Musical star will have a much bigger role obviously in the new flick, which already has a scheduled US release date of July 7, 2017.
