Jamie Vardy's wife was tear gassed by police who were treating fans 'like animals' on her

Rebekah Vardy slammed the behaviour of officers as 'horrific' and claimed that English supporters were caged in 'like animals' as they tried to make their way into Stade Vélodrome in Marseille. Vardy did not make it onto the pitch to help his teammates in their Group B opener, with the game ending 1-1. However, his lack of action was far from the mind of Rebekah as she tweeted furiously about the treatment of England fans. She wrote: 'That has to be up there with the worst experience EVER at an away game! Teargassed for no reason, caged and treated like animals! Shocking! I witnessed this with my own eyes! I can't comment on things I didn't see but what I got caught up in was horrific and uncalled for!' As well as trouble on the way to the ground there was mass brawls inside, with Russian fans sparking brutal violence. Hundreds of English supporters were seen hurling themselves over railings as they tried to flee from the stadium with stewards attempting to break up fights across rows of seats. French police have spent the past three days and nights trying to quell the violence on Marseille's streets as Russian and English fans battle each other and local youths.

Murder of Carl Bridgewater could be finally resolved after new allegations

Carl Bridgewater (pictured) was shot in the head at point-blank range as he delivered newspapers to Yew Tree Farm (inset, left), near Stourbridge in Staffordshire in 1978. His death provoked four infamous miscarriages of justice and today remains one of this country's most terrible unsolved murders. Bert Spencer (bottom left in his younger days), briefly a suspect, would fade from the picture thanks to a 'cast-iron' alibi. Four men - now known to history as the Bridgewater Four - were found guilty of the crime. But those convictions would ultimately be overturned on appeal in 1997. One of the four had died in prison. No one else has ever been successfully convicted. But today Bert Spencer (bottom right) is in the foreground once again. In a series of revealing interviews with the convicted murderer, top criminologist Professor David Wilson blows a hole in his alibi - with new evidence from his own wife at the time, Janet Spencer, who has spoken publicly for the first time to say she suspects he is the killer.
