There must be something in the water: Today host Dylan Dreyer reveals she is pregnant just days after anchor Savannah Guthrie

  • Dylan Dreyer announced that she is pregnant with her first child on Today Friday morning
  • The news comes three days after Savannah Guthrie revealed that she was expecting her second child
  • Dreyer also shared that she was having a boy and that she was due in December, just like Guthrie
  • The hosts said they had no idea though Roker seemed to suggest he had an idea and thought she had gained weight at one point last month
  • Dreyer, 34, was joined by her husband, NBC Nightly News camera operator Brian Fichera, later in the program to celebrate
  • Matt Lauer joked after hearing the news: 'You know, taking over morning television one new viewer at a time. Here we go'

There must be something in the water over at 30 Rockefeller Center as another member of the Today team is expecting a tiny bundle of joy later this year.

Dylan Dreyer, the host of Weekend Today and a meteorologist for NBC News, revealed she is pregnant with her first child on Friday.

The news came just three days after anchor Savannah Guthrie announced that she was expecting her second child and both women made their announcements in similar fashion, claiming that they were participating in a new Fishbowl segment.

The other members of the Today team who were in the studio however - Al Roker, Tamron Hall, Carson Daly and Guthrie - thought that the segment was real this time, with Daly and Guthrie answering questions prior to Dreyer taking a turn.

When it came time for Dreyer to pick she pulled out a piece of paper and read aloud the same question Guthrie had received from the bowl on Tuesday: 'Are you pregnant?'

Dreyer, 34, pretended to be unamused by the question and said: 'You guys need some new jokes.'

She continued to play it off as a joke by showing her colleagues that the piece of paper really did say that before bursting out in a smile and announcing: 'Yes I am.'

Dreyer's news caused the other four members of the team who were in the studio to yell out in joy, with Guthrie clearly the most excited of the bunch.

She immediately raised her arms in the air before running over and hugging her fellow mom-to-be.

Guthrie then asked if she and Dreyer could do a side by side comparison, saying that she looked 18-months pregnant while Dreyer still has a 'washboard flat stomach.'

The show also cut to Matt Lauer, who is on assignment in Louisville, Kentucky for Muhammad Ali's funeral service, so he could join in the celebration.

Guthrie asked if he was surprised by the news and he joked: 'You know, taking over morning television one new viewer at a time. Here we go.'

Dreyer then chimed in laughing, saying: 'We're going to grow viewers.'

Daly then noted that he should have known when he and Lauer played golf with Dreyer recently and she refused to have a beer.

This was similar to the story Hoda Kota shared on Tuesday about Guthrie, who she said was not drinking wine during their most recent dinner.

'With Savannah it was you weren't drinking and with Dylan, when Matt and me and Dylan played golf the other day and I was trying to get you to have a beer,' said Daly.

'I always have a beer on the golf course,' pointed out Dreyer.

Hall then asked Daly if he knew then but he admitted that he had no idea at the time.

Guthrie then asked that Dreyer tell them everything. She started off by saying that she is due in December, just like Guthrie, so the two 'can battle it out,' and then shared the sex of the baby.

'We can't do surprises at all in our family at all, so i found out what we're having right away,' said Dreyer.

She then told her co-hosts how she first revealed the sex to her husband, saying she filled her apartment with balloons and filled one with confetti so he would have to pop them all until he found the correct one.

At that moment a producer brought out a balloon which Dreyer popped with a push pin on a pacifier revealing blue confetti to signify that she is having a boy.

Dreyer was then gifted with a large basket of baby clothes and Today paraphernalia as well as a round of chocolate milkshakes were brought out for the five hosts, which Guthrie seemed equally excited about.

Roker did reveal at the end that he thought something might be up at a lunch last month with members of the weather department, with Dreyer acknowledging that she did notice him looking at her funny.

'I know exactly the face he made, he did this weird little look and I was like, "What?",' said Dreyer.

'And you were like, "Nope. Nothing."'

Hall then asked Roker what he was thinking and he said: 'I thought she looked...'

Dryer jumped in to say: 'He thought I looked a little heavy,' at which point Roker nodded his head.

It then cut back to Lauer who asked that the fishbowl be removed from the studio and taken away saying they would not need it for a while.

'It's like throwing a bouquet at a wedding,' joked Guthrie. 'Tamron, you're next!'

She then pushed the bowl towards Hall, who slowly pushed it back towards the center of the table.

'We love you. Congrats,' said Guthrie, who could later be heard off camera while Roker was giving the weather report talking to Dreyer about how excited she is about the news.

Later in the program the celebration continued as Dreyer's husband Brian Fichera, an NBC Nightly News cameraman, came out and joined his wife for a Today's Take segment he was doing alongside Hall and Roker.

'So, he likes to be behind the camera, this is kind of his nightmare,' said Dreyer as her husband made his way through the studio.

He then joked with Roker who had called him a cameraman seconds earlier by stating his title was 'camera operator.'

The couple got another giant basket of baby gifts before participating in a Ferris Bueller's Day Off trivia segment in honor of the film's 30th anniversary.

Fichera, 29, kept quiet for most of the segment, but the Today Twitter account later posted video of him doing the worm in the studio, writing: '@DylanDreyerNBC's husband wins for best pregnancy announcement reaction... the worm!'

Not in the studio to celebrate the news were Natalie Morales and Willie Geist. Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford were also missing as they do not tape on Friday, instead filming two episodes on Thursday.

Geist posted on Twitter soon after hearing the news, writing: 'Dylan! She and I hosted an event together Wednesday night and not so much as a hint. Congrats to you & Brian!'

Kotba also posted, writing: 'Congrats!!!!!! So happy for you two Xoxox'

Dreyer also got some love from Today correspondent and mother of two Jenna Bush Hager, who wrote on Twitter: '@DylanDreyerNBC! YES. Welcome to be the best club in the world! Motherhood will suit you, I'm sure! Play dates? Xx'

And while some of her fellow Today hosts may not have been around to celebrate on Friday, Dreyer did get to share her baby joy with Nick Jonas, who was performing as part of the Today Summer Series.

Dreyer, who has been married to her husband for almost four years, also wrote a post about her baby news on the Today website.

In that post she said that there was a time that she and her husband thought they did not even want to have kids.

'Then one day we both looked at each other and said, "I want a baby!"' wrote Dreyer.

She also shared how nervous she has been about the health of the baby and how happy she is to be able to share the news now that she is out of her first trimester.

Dreyer also said she will be looking to her pregnant colleague for advice throughout her pregnancy, and after she welcomes her baby boy in December.

'I hope Savannah doesn't mind me peppering her with a million questions,' wrote Dreyer.

'Since we're due at practically the same time and she's already a trained professional, she's my perfect resource!'

Dreyer then closed her post by joking that she did plan the baby's arrival to get out of covering winter storm season.
