'I know he'd be proud': Warcraft director Duncan Jones says it was his father David Bowie who steered him into film-making in a moment that 'absolutely changed my life'
Duncan Jones may have lost his famous father, David Bowie, earlier this year but his memory still lives on through Duncan.
The Warcraft director spoke candidly of his late father, who passed away from liver cancer in January, and said it was the famous singer who pushed him into film-making.
The now 45-year-old told the Sydney Morning Herald, in an interview published on Saturday, he was studying his doctorate in philosophy at university when his father intervened.
Push in the right direction: Warcraft director Duncan Jones says his famous father, David Bowie, helped him pursue his film-making dreams
‘My dad saw that I was miserable and said “we're up in Montreal [filming TV series The Hunger], come and hang out with us”,’ Duncan revealed, who is David's son with Angie Bowie.
‘Tony Scott put a camera in my hands and said “why don't you do this?”. I had grown up loving cinema, making my own shorts, so I already had a taste for it.
‘But getting a chance to do it as an adult in a more professional capacity absolutely changed my life.’
Not long after, Duncan (who was once known as Zowie Bowie) enlisted at London Film School to turn his childhood camera obsession into a full-time career.
And the director of the blockbuster sci-fi film says his old man would be looking down smiling at his latest efforts, telling the publication: 'I think he'd be proud...I know he'd be proud.'

From there, he worked on commercials before making a name for himself with two science fiction films - Moon and Source Code.
Moon follows an astronaut, played by Sam Rockwell, who tries to escape from a deserted lunar base.
Meanwhile, Source Code focuses on an agent, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who relives the same eight minutes again and again until he can locate a bomber on a train.
Moving out from the shadows: The 45-year-old then enlisted to film school before making a name for himself with two science fiction films - Moon and Source Code
With these two films firmly under his belt, the scriptwriter and director was able to take on Universal’s latest movie installment, Warcraft.
The $100 million film is set in the fictional world of Azeroth, populated by the humans, which comes under threat when a Dark Portal opens from the dying world of Draenor, bringing with it invading orcs.
A combination of CGI and green screens were used to help to recreate the deep universe established by the 1990s game, World Of Warcraft.
Concerned: Duncan admitted that he was worried about getting Warcraft wrong and destroying the concept for the legion of dedicated fans
Over the course of 22-years the game has turned from a leisurely activity into a lifestyle for some, with more than 5.5 million active subscribers.
Duncan admitted to The Guardian he was worried about getting the movie wrong for the legion of dedicated gamers.
‘If you get it wrong, people are going to be very upset,’ he told the publication.
'The thing you have to remember with Warcraft, probably more than with any other computer game, ever, is that people spend more time in this place than in the places they live.
‘It actually is like their home town. So if you get that wrong it’s a bit like the people in Notting Hill, who are still recovering from the Notting Hill movie.’
