MOLAA is pleased to present Transformations, an exhibition that visually portrays the inspiring, life-changing stories of five community members and showcases the Museum’s collection in a new and creative way. Collaborating with MOLAA’s Curator of Collections, Carlos Ortega, the five participants selected artwork from MOLAA’s collection that they felt best depicted their emotional state both before and after their life-changing event. Their stories explore the durability of the human spirit in the face of extremely complex human experiences ranging from topics like dealing with cancer to gang violence.

By sharing these stories and encouraging visitors to do the same, MOLAA hopes to represent the emotional power of art and the diversity, challenges and creativity of the community. MOLAA commissioned conceptual artist, Kendell Carter, to design a key component of the exhibition, an area for reflection and creative exchange where visitors can gather, interact, and share their own transformations. Characteristic of his work, Carter utilized elements of popular urban culture in developing the space.
