'It simply didn't work out': Leona Lewis ditched by record label just weeks before making her debut in Broadway musical Cats

Leona Lewis has been dropped from her record label one year after splitting from former mentor Simon Cowell's company, Syco.

The singer, 31, broke records with her debut single Bleeding Love, which remained in the number one spot for seven weeks back in 2007.

But The X Factor winner has now been ditched by Island Records just weeks before making her Broadway debut in Cats.

A source close to Leona told The Sun: 'It simply didn't work out with Island. She made a great record and the label really championed her but something just didn't click.'

Leona's first single released under Island Records - Fire Under My Feet from her fifth studio album I Am - flopped in September last year after it sold just 8,500 copies in its first week and failed to made headway in the charts.

Label executives are due to hold a meeting with the former X Factor star in the coming days to discuss her future because they don't want to cut ties with Leona completely.

The insider added: 'Universal is still very keen to keep her as part of the family so they will be holding a meeting next week to discuss her future.'

The move comes after it was announced the singer has replaced Nicole Scherzinger - who dropped out to be a judge on X Factor - in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats.

Leona announced she would be starring in the musical on Twitter last month, writing: 'Can't even believe this. I'm thrilled & honoured to announce I'll be playing the part of Grizabella in @CatsBroadway!'

There is still hope Leona could return to Syco after Cowell made clear he was open to the star returning to his label.

Last year, her former boss reached out to the estranged star with a potentially career-saving offer.

'I have a real soft spot for Leona for so many reasons. I'd say to her, and I genuinely mean this, that the door will always be left open,' he said.

'Any time she ever thought, "I want to come back to Syco" I'd welcome her back with open arms.

'When you've got talent as good as this and a voice as good as that, with the right song you can always have a hit.'

At the time, the star said she left Cowell's label to save her career and called her relationship with the company 'complicated'.

Leona, who attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, won the X Factor back in 2006 and initially went from success to success.

Her first cover of Kelly Clarkson's A Moment Like This broke a world record after being downloaded more than 50,000 times in half an hour.

Her worldwide breakthrough came with her Bleeding Love single - released in 2007 - which reached the number one spot in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and other countries across the world.

She released three further albums at Syco to mixed success critical and commercial success.
