Boro Trio Honoured In Awards Ceremony

Posted: Wed 07 May 2003

THREE Boro stars were this evening presented with prizes by the Middlesbrough's Official Supporters Club.

In a special awards night in the Riverside Stadium's Legends Lounge, Jonathan Greening received the Player of the Year trophy.

Greening received most votes from members of the supporters club, finishing narrowly ahead of club captain Gareth Southgate.

The midfielder had already collected the Dial-a-Phone Player of the Year award, also voted for by Boro fans, before Saturday's 5-1 win over Spurs.

Meanwhile, right-back Stuart Parnaby was the clear choice as the Supporters Club Young Player of the Year.

A third award was made to Parnaby's fellow right-back, Robbie Stockdale. He received a new award as the first Community Player of the Year as a result of his outstanding commitment to the local community.

The Redcar-born defender made more community appearances in support of local initiatives and charitable causes over the past year than any other Boro player.

Supporters Club Vice-Chairman Sue Gardener said: "This is a new award that we have launched in recognition of the first class job carried out by our outgoing chairman John Ovington.

"We wanted an annual award that recognised the work done by so many of the Boro players in the local community.

"We discussed this with the football club and it was agreed that Robbie, as a local lad, had shown commitment beyond the call of duty."

Boro's Community Liaison Officer Diane O'Connell said: "Ever since he came into the first team squad, Robbie has always been first class with the help and time he has freely given in support of charities, good causes and the club's own educational projects.

"He regularly steps in at the last minute to cover for team-mates who are unable to attend community events.

"He has a fantastic attitude when it comes to giving something back to the supporters and the community in general.

"It's great that the Supporters Club has recognised his work in this way."

The awards night was attended by members of the Supporters Club, together with a number of Boro players, members of the club's coaching team and other senior staff.
