Penn-y for your thoughts! Sean looks glum as he goes for a walk in sweat pants in wake of new film being booed and laughed at

His latest attempt at becoming the next great American director has blown up in his face.

So it is perhaps understandable Sean Penn was looking rather glum as he went for a wander in the posh Malibu area on Wednesday.

The jolly actor looked like he was still nursing the heartbreak of The Last Face being roundly panned as he stepped out with a friend and his pet golden retriever in the California celebrity enclave.

Indeed the movie met with much laughter and booing when it was screened at the prestigious Cannes FIlm Festival last month, a moment that surely left the self-styled filmmaker squirming in his seat.

Into The Wild director Sean, 55, certainly looked like he was moping around as he shuffled down the street in a green and blue hooded top, Adidas jogging bottoms and trainers.

Even his long-suffering pooch and his sidekick did not look in the best off moods, despite the fact they were going for a stroll in a sun-kissed paradise.

One person who has been chuckling at the leather-faced star's predicament is his former wife Robin Wright.

She is said to be particularly thrilled at how the project has turned out as the Little House On The Prairie favourite supposedly stole it from under her nose.

Robin had been planning to star in the movie about an aid worker in Africa who falls in love with a doctor alongside Ryan Gosling, the later Javier Bardem, who ended up starring in the movie.

The 50-year-old House Of Cards stunner had previously been attempting to develop the film herself for many years, but instead she was muscled out of the deal and Sean ended up casting the part she had been keen on with his then girlfriend Charlize Theron.

An insider said: 'It would have killed (Robin) if Charlize had won an Oscar in the role that was meant for her.'

Thankfully for Sean's former spouse, who was married to the notoriously grumpy star from 1996 until 2010, that looks rather unlikely at this point.

The film currently has a seven per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with even The Guardian slating it, saying, 'African conflict is (an) aphrodisiac for white people in Sean Penn's crass romance.'

What an insult: Sean is said to have snatched The Last Face from under ex-wife Robin Wright's nose then cast his younger then-squeeze Charlize Theron
