Jo Cox dead after Labour MP is shot and stabbed by man in Birstall

Murdered Labour MP Jo Cox was subjected to a barrage of hate mail in the three months prior to her brutal killing and police had been considering stepping up her security. The married 41-year-old mother-of-two was punched and kicked to the ground by her attacker before being shot three times - once with what appeared to be an antique outside a West Yorkshire library. The rising Labour star and dedicated MP died from the catastrophic injuries she sustained in yesterday's attack, after the killer ambushed her as she walked to her constituency surgery in Birstall near Leeds. Two hours after her death, her husband Brendan (pictured, top left, on their wedding day) - with whom she has two young children, aged three and five - tweeted a photograph of his wife and urged people to 'fight against the hatred that killed her.' A 52-year-old man - named locally as 'loner' Tommy Mair (bottom left) - has been arrested by police. Pictures (right) show the suspect after he was tackled by police. Meanwhile mourners, including fellow MP Rachel Reeves (centre) and contituents (inset), paid tribute at a vigil at St Peter's church in Birstall last night.

Labour MP Neil Coyle faces backlash after criticising Leave EU on Newsnight

Neil Coyle, Labour MP for Bermondsey and Southwark, said Leave campaigners were putting out 'very dangerous' material which 'risks inspiring the hard-right' as he commented on Jo Cox's death. He also appeared to suggest the attacker who ambushed the 41-year-old outside a West Yorkshire library may have been politically motivated and criticised UKIP's new poster depicting migrants. Appearing on Newsnight last night following her death, Mr Coyle - a friend and colleague of Ms Cox - said the Leave campaign should be 'careful' about the material it publishes.

Britain First denies connection to attacker who killed Labour MP Jo Cox

Far-right party Britain First has denied any connection to the suspect who shot and repeatedly stabbed Labour MP Jo Cox in a horrific attack outside her constituency surgery in Leeds today. The 41-year-old married mother-of-two was shot three times - once in the head - and stabbed by a gunman who opened fire on her in the Birstall area of Leeds. It was claimed the man - named locally as 53-year-old 'loner' Tommy Mair - shouted 'Britain First' as he launched the attack. However, Britain First - a British nationalist political party which campaigns against immigration, multiculturalism and Islam - has now distanced itself from the attack and denied any connection. In a video message tonight, the group's leader, former British National Party councillor Paul Golding (pictured), claimed the attacker could have shouted 'It's time to put Britain first', as he dismissed witness accounts as 'hearsay'.

Gabby Giffords, the former Arizona Representative who survived being shot in the head in a vicious assassination attempt in 2011, said she was 'sickened' by the murder of a UK politician Thursday.

Mother-of-two Jo Cox was remembered by her constituents, friends and colleagues as they packed out St Peter's Church in Birstall to mourn their friend and peer.
