'I needed a job': Friends actor Matt LeBlanc reveals he only took the Top Gear presenting gig as he was out of work

He became an international star portraying Joey Tribbiani in hit series Friends. 

But Matt LeBlanc has admitted he only took his recent presenting stint on Top Gear as he had no other offers on the table. 

The 48-year-old actor appeared on James Corden's The Late, Late Show this week, and confessed he needed a job as TV series Episodes was coming to an end.

The Joey star was filming the final series of his comedy show Episodes, when the BBC approached him to join their motoring series.

Speaking to James Corden, the American actor said: 'Episodes was coming to an end and I needed a job. So I said: 'Why not?'.

Matt previously appeared on Top Gear in 2012 when Jeremy Clarkson was the host, and he became one of the top drivers on their segment Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car.

However the father-of-one confessed he finds driving in the UK harder than in the US, explaining: 'The roads here are so much wider and bigger, but in the UK and London the roads are so narrow because they were built for horses and carts.'

'So here if you make a mistake and get a bit wide you maybe hit a tree, or some bushes. Over there, you go off line? You hit a 1000-year-old church'. 

Showing off his driving skills, the actor-turned-producer beat British presenter Corden in a race around the studio on purple scooters.

Dubbed 'Bottom Gear', the hilarious race saw the duo overcoming obstacles including tight turns, steep ramps, water balloons and silly string, with Matt emerging victorious. 

Matt and Chris Evans are co-presenting Top Gear, which returned to screens in May.

However the show has had mixed reviews, with last week's show receiving the lowest viewing figures yet, with an average of 2.4 million people tuning in compared to 2.8 million the week before.

Original presenter Jeremy Clarkson was dropped from the show at the beginning of the year after an 'unprovoked physical attack' on a Top Gear producer.
