Iceland draw inspiration from 'Escape to Victory' style kit as Euro 2016 minnows hold Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal

  • Minnows wore kit which was reminiscent of one worn in a famous film

Iceland made an impressive first appearance at the European Championship on Tuesday night and it was not just for holding highly-fancied Portugal to a 1-1 draw.

The Euro 2016 minnows faced the heavyweight rivals in an eye-catching kit which appeared to be influenced by the famous eighties film 'Escape to Victory'.

In the movie, the Allied Prisoners of War (POWs), featuring the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Pele and Booby Moore, overcame overwhelming odds to deny the Germans in an exhibition match during Second World War.

Iceland showed their battling qualities to claim a draw with Portugal in their Euro 2016 opener.

Iceland were outplayed for large spells in the Group F clash in St Etienne - and mustered only four shots to Portugal's 25 - but were rewarded for a spirited and organised display.

Birkir Bjarnason's equaliser, Iceland's first goal at a major tournament, cancelled out Nani's first-half effort and earned the point.

Afterwards Iceland co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson hailed a superb team performance.

He said: 'It's down to teamwork. You can't put one player to stop a guy like (Cristiano) Ronaldo. It has to be a team effort, closing the areas.

'There were a lot of players responsible for Ronaldo. We did a really good job, well done the lads.'
