EXCLUSIVE: 'I haven't read the books': Fifty Shades Darker star Tyler Hoechlin reveals he didn't research steamy romance novel series before filming

It's been said that Fifty Shades Of Grey is one of the highest selling erotic romance novels to date.

But actor Tyler Hoechlin says he hasn't actually read any of the books in E.L. James' famous series, despite landing a role in the highly anticipated film sequel Fifty Shades Darker.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia during the Sydney Film Festival premiere of Everybody Wants Some on Saturday, the 28-year-old Teen Wolf star admitted: 'I have not read the books'.

The dark-haired stud is set to play Anastasia Steele's co-worker Boyce Fox, in Fifty Shades Darker, expected to be released early next year.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Tyler's character will have a greater role in the film, compared to his rather brief mention in the books as simply 'a rising author who eventually signs with Christian Grey's publishing company'.  

Speaking of his experiences filming the highly anticipated film, Tyler told Daily Mail Australia on Saturday: 'It was fun to be a part of [filming]. It's interesting going from something like Teen Wolf where we had to build a fan base and then go into something like that where there's already such an existing fan base'.

Returning to the film franchise after starring in the first flick will be leads Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, who play Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey respectively. 

Fifty Shades Darker follows the unlikely couple as they embark on their contracted relationship, but under new conditions.

Filming for the sequel began filming in February, and saw the actors fly out to Canada for production. 

The movie also stars Kim Basinger, Bella Heathcote, Marcia Gay Harden and Rita Ora. 

Meanwhile it looks like Tyler's career is going from strength to strength, the charismatic actor known to many of his fans as Derek Hale on popular television series Teen Wolf.

Earlier this week it was announced that he will play Superman in the upcoming series Supergirl and will star opposite lead actress Melissa Benoist.

When speaking to Daily Mail Australia over the weekend, he was quizzed about whether he felt nervous about living up to Henry Cavill's recent portrayal of the iconic superhero in his new role. 

'I never try to compare and contrast performances because it's such an iconic character already', he revealed.

 'Superman is Superman so I'm just going to try to carry on the tradition of that and play that part'.

Tyler also revealed that he was especially excited about playing the Man Of Steel's alter ego, Clark Kent, admitting: 'I think the fun is going to be finding where Clark Kent is in this world. I'm just excited to find out Clark's sense of humour'.
