Crippling anxiety recently prevented him from performing a gig at Wembley Stadium.

And Zayn Malik, 23, revealed an unhealthy lifestyle has impacted on his overall health in a candid interview with PAPER magazine.

The former One Direction singer explained: 'I've not been feeling too well recently because I've been partying too much and not looking after myself and eating enough food. I'm just trying to take care of myself.'

Time to change: Zayn Malik, 23, revealed his unhealthy lifestyle has impacted on his health in an interview with PAPER magazine

The star's debut album Mind of Mine is full of sexual references and steamy lyrics, and Zayn admitted that they were inspired by his own experiences.

He explained: 'It wasn't a conscious decision to make [the album] sexual or refer to sex, but I just found out that a lot of situations that I was in were quite sexual situations -- all of the time. I enjoyed singing about [sex], clearly.'

The heartthrob recently reconnected with girlfriend Gigi Hadid after a brief split, and Zayn revealed that the American beauty was trying to involve him in her love of horse riding.

Candid: His interview with the magazine follows his revelation that crippling anxiety and stage fright were the reasons behind him dropping out of the Capital FM Summertime Ball last week

He said: 'She rides very well, and she has since she was a kid. She wants me to do it with her, and I'm not good. But I'm learning, and it's fun.'

And learning the new skill is no doubt bringing the two closer together, with the singer admitting he finds it attractive when a woman tries to teach him something new.

While he admitted that physical appearance was important in a partner, he added that as he's getting older he is more interested in personality and finding a solid connection with somebody.

Zayn recently withdrew from Capital FM's Summertime Ball 90 minutes after he was due to take the stage, citing anxiety as the reason.

In a brave and honest Instagram post to fans, the star wrote: 'Unfortunately my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me.

'With the magnitude of the event I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career,' he continued, cancelling the gig one and a half hours after he was due on stage.

'I cannot apologise enough but I want to be honest with everyone who has patiently waited to see me, I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I've let down today.

'I know those who suffer anxiety will understand and I hope those who don't can empathises with my situation.'

It has since been revealed that the singer and his team are looking to Adele for help, after the singer successfully overcame her own battle with stage fright.
