Poland reached the knockout stages of the European Championship for the first time in their history following a 1-0 victory over neighbours Ukraine in the Stade Velodrome, Marseille.

Robert Lewandowski and Andriy Yarmolenko squandered opportunities for either side during a drab opening half before substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski netted the winner for the Poles with a screaming left-footed shot after the interval.

Poland finished runners up in Group C following Germany's expected victory over Northern Ireland - while Ukraine leave the tournament without a point.

So three teams are now through to the last-16 of Euro 2016

Poland's win means they will finish as group runners-up and it sets up the first last-16 clash as they take on Switzerland in Saint-Etienne.

Germany have beaten Northern Ireland which means they go through as group winners and will face Albania, Slovakia or the third place team from Group F.

Speaking of Slovakia, they are also through as one of the best third-placed teams as they have exceeded Albania and Northern Ireland's total.

18:52
FULL-TIME: Ukraine 0-1 Poland

Poland are through to the last-16 of Euro 2016 as Group C runners-up

18:51
Poland substitution

90+3min: Poland also make a change as Filip Starzynski replaces Milik. Ukraine fans cheers as Tymoshchuk gets a touch of the ball.

18:50
Ukraine substitution

90+2min: It's a token appearance for former Bayern Munich midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk who wins his 144th and probably final cap at the age of 37 to replace Zozulya.

18:49

90+1min: We are now into three additional minutes as Ukraine prepare to make a final change.

18:47

88min: Poland could be a dark horse going forward in this tournament. They have hardly had an attack, but were clinical when they did and the defence has been so well organised.

Ukraine may have dominated but you sense Poland were more than happy to let their neighbours try and dictate the pattern of the game.

18:45

85min: Top defending from Grzegorz Krychowiak as the Poland midfielder intercepts a byline cut-back intended for Zozulya as he slides in to take the ball then clear.

It's constant Ukraine attacking but you have to credit the Poland defending - they have put in a big shift today and very rarely have they looked like getting breached.

18:41

82min: Now Fabianski is called into action! The Swansea keeper dives well to his left to push away a 20-yard Ruslan Rotan effort before then diving bravely at the feet of Artem Fedetskiy to collect the rebound.

Poland fans light a flare during their side's clash with Ukraine in Marseille
18:38

80min: Roman Zozulya has been heavily marked out this game but the Ukraine striker finally manages to get a chance in on goal. Yarmolenko floats a cross into the box but unmarked he can only glance a low header wide of Lukasz Fabianksi's post.

18:37

77min: Meanwhile it's still 1-0 to Germany against Northern Ireland although the world champions should be out of sight.

It would leave Poland to finish as runners-up which means they are on course for a last-16 clash with Switzerland.

18:33

74min: Big chance for Poland. Grosicki's near post free-kick is attacked by Arkadiusz Milik but his header across goal is narrowly wide. If only England could take free-kicks like that, and by 'like that' I mean actually finding a team-mate.

Poland's Jakub Blaszczykowski celebrates after scoring the opening goal from off the bench
18:31
Ukraine substitution

73min: And that's the end of Zinchenko's afternoon as he is replaced by Viktor Kovalenko.

18:30

72min: Another Ukraine chance horribly wasted. Konoplyanka's low shot results in the ball pinging around the box before it falls for Zinchenko who fires a snapshot first time over the bar.

18:29
Poland substitution

71min: Here comes that change and it's a like-for-like attacking switch saw as Kamil Grosicki comes on for Kapustka - the latter of course will miss Poland's last-16 match.

18:27

69min: Poland are getting ready to make their first change. If it's an option to bolster the defensive ranks then that really s Ukraine done for.

18:26

66min: Taras Stepanenko is another player rather lucky not to be booked after an overzealous lunge on Kapustka results in a free-kick but no caution.

Ukraine are back on the attack but I'm sensing they could play all day and night and not score a goal at Euro 2016.

18:22
From GracenoteLive
18:21

63min: Chance for Ukraine as a cross is nodded back into the path of Yarmolenko, who then squares for Yevhen Konoplyanka.

The winger shoots first time with a curled side foot effort from the edge of the box but his strike sails a yard over the bar.

18:18

60min: More poor decision making from Kapustka who will now miss the next match after being booked for a needless trip on Andriy Yarmolenko.

Jakub Blaszczykowski (bottom left) opened the scoring for Poland with a top corner bound effort
Blaszczykowski celebrates by sliding on his knees after opening the scoring in Marseille
18:15

57min: It very quickly should be 2-0. Bartosz Kapustka breaks clear on the left but after cutting into the box he fires into the side netting at the near post - with Lewandowski waiting to apply a simple tap -in...

18:11
GOAL! Ukraine 0-1 POLAND

54min: Here come the big guns and the big names! Jakub Blaszczykowski collects a low pass inside the box before performing a lovely turn to create space for a unstoppable effort into the top corner. Cracking finish!

18:11

52min: Poland are starting to get into the game now as Lewandowski is found in space before winning a corner.

18:07

49min: Chance for Ukraine. Konoplyanka plays just about his first teasing cross of the day as he finds Oleksandr Zinchenko inside the box, but the forward can only glance a header over the crossbar.

18:06

48min: Much of the same so far. Ukraine are keen to dictate the pattern of the play but it says it all when the live TV feed is finding more interest in watching the Ukraine fans clap in unison.

18:03
SECOND HALF: Away we go again as Poland make a change

On come the big guns as Jakub Blaszczykowski comes on to replace Piotr Zielinski for Poland.

17:56
The table makes good reading for Slovakia though...

As it stands Germany will win the group as they lead Northern Ireland 1-0 (it should be about 10-0), while Poland would progress as runners-up.

It would leave Northern Ireland in third on three points and that would be enough for Group B's Slovakia to be one of the best third place teams on four points and book a passage to the last-16.

17:52
Well that was 45 minutes I'll never get back...

Ukraine may have been the first side out of Euro 2016 but they are far from the worst. They've been much the better side in the first period which they have dominated but their lack of creativity means they do not have the goal to show for it.

It sums up their tournament really - they haven't scored at all in France and that's why they are going home.

Poland have been a massive disappointment outside the first five minutes. Lewandowski has hardly had a kick.

17:47
HALF-TIME: Ukraine 0-0 Poland
Poland's Robert Lewandowski (centre) clears the ball during the goalless first half
17:47

45min: Tomasz Jodlowiec has a token effort for Poland - in what has been their just about their first attack in the last half-an-hour - as he fires straight at Pyatov from distance.

17:45

43min: Another Ukraine break that should end with a chance but instead ends with me bashing my head on the keyboard in utter despair.

Yarmolenko breaks before laying the ball off for overlapping full-back Artem Fedetskiy, but his cross is terrible as it sails over everyone's head inside the box.

17:42

40min: Ukraine finally find a pocket of space through Konoplyanka who plays the ball into the box for Bogdan Butko.

The Sevilla winger races into the Poland penalty area to receive a return pass, but it's a poor cut-back for the one-time Liverpool and Spurs target who can't manage to turn a shot on goal.

Ukraine's Andriy Yarmolenko scuffs his shot past Poland keeper Lukasz Fabianski but wide of the target
17:39

37min: All jokes aside though, this match has been exactly like last night's game in Saint-Etienne. Ukraine are carving out half-chances at best as Olexandr Kucher is booked for chopping down Lewandowski.

17:37

34min: Ukraine are having so much of the ball but they are constantly running into brick walls... not real ones obviously.

But Ukraine are going from side-to-side without ever playing a dangerous pass. Just like watching England you might say...

17:33

31min: Big blow for Poland's hopes of topping the group as Germany have taken a 1-0 lead against Northern Ireland through Mario Gomez. Click here to follow that action with Sportsmail's Matt Maltby.

Meanwhile Ukraine continue to dominate the possession game but not much else in Marseille.

17:30

28min: Fabianski is again off his line, this time plucking a cross off the head of Zozulya. Ukraine are the better side here but that's not saying much. Their best player Yevhen Konoplyanka can hardly get a kick.

Poland's goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski saves the ball in front of Ukraine's Artem Fedetskiy in action
17:27

25min: Fabianski has been arguably Poland's best player so far as the Swansea City keeper races off his line to confidently claim a free-kick in front of Artem Fedetskiy.

Meanwhile Ruslan Rotan, having been late with one challenge already, is booked after tripping Bartosz Kapustka on the touchline.

17:23

22min: Still no luck in front of goal for Lewandowski, who having stopped the ball dead hits a snap side footed effort across goal which deflects out for a corner - one Ukraine clear.

17:20

19min: Ukraine should be ahead. A deft touch allows Yarmolenko a free run at goal but after cantering into the box he side-foots a clumsy shot well off target past an onrushing Fabianski.

A terrible finish - I'd even expect a centre-back to do better from that position.

Arkadiusz Milik (left) of Poland shoots on goal in the opening moments of the match
17:19

16min: Come on ref, that's a booking! The lesser spotted Ukraine defender makes an appearance as Olexandr Kucher blatantly pulls on the arm of Lewandowski to stop the Poland striker leading an attack. A free-kick is given but not a card - bit too lenient.

17:15

13min: Lots of offsides so far. Lewandowski has timed one of is runs too early while his opposite number Roman Zozulya has also caused the assistant's flag to be raised a couple of times. Thankfully for the sake of entertainment this has been a rather attacking start.

Poland fans light flares inside the Stade Velodrome before the game
Ukraine supporters show a display of unity by holding up national flags
17:13

10min: I'm still looking for that Ukraine defence but thankfully for them they are not needed right now.

Ukraine are enjoying a good attacking spell having made a slow ol' start.

17:11

7min: Finally Ukraine get to grips with this match - and the tournament. Andriy Yarmolenko is played into the box but from a very tight angle he sees his shot take a deflection which robs it of power before Lukasz Fabianski claims.

17:06

4min: What a chance! This is an even better opportunity for Poland. A cross falls at the feet of Robert Lewandowski 10 yards out but the Bayern Munich striker doesn't control the ball properly before scooping the ball over the crossbar.

Someone better check the Ukraine defence has come out the dressing room - we simply haven't seen them yet.

Poland's Kamil Glik (left) and Ukraine's Olexandr Zinchenko vie for the ball in the early stages
17:04

3min: Ukraine's tournament so nearly gets worse. Arkadiusz Milik takes less than three minutes to get behind the defence before his shot from the angle is well beaten away by Andriy Pyatov.

Out come the players in Marseille...

It's a full house inside the ground - with one stand bathed in sunshine against a playing surface fully covered by shade.

This is a clash between the co-hosts of Euro 2012, and while both sides went out in the group stage four years ago, Poland look all but set to reach the last-16.

Ukraine by contrast were the first side eliminated from the tournament.

Both sides ring the changes ahead of the Group C finale

Poland have taken the decision to rest a couple of key men ahead of the Marseille game as Thiago Cionek, Tomasz Jodlowiec, Piotr Zielinski, Bartosz Kapustka all come into the side.

Jakub Blaszczykowski, Lukasz Piszczek are rested for Poland while Kamil Grosicki and Krzysztof Maczynski also drop out having been booked in the 0-0 draw with Germany.

Ukraine make five changes ahead of their final game of the tournament. Evgen Seleznyov and  Viktor Kovalenko are dropped from the attack to be replaced by Roman Zozulya and Oleksandr Zinchenko

Serhiy Sydorchuk, Yaroslav Rakitskiy and Viacheslav Shevchuk also make way as Ruslan Rotan, Olexandr Kucher and Bogdan Butko come into the side.

16:24
Well...it was going well between fans outside the ground...

Ukraine head coach Mykhaylo Fomenko will quit after Tuesday's final group game against Poland at Euro 2016.

The 67-year-old, who has been in charge of the national side since 2012, revealed that he has not been offered an extension to his contract following a disappointing campaign in France.

Fomenko's side were comfortably defeated by world champions Germany in their opening Group C match on June 12.

Here is how all the groups stand going into this clash

The advantage we have today is now all potential third placed teams know where they stand. Poland will qualify for the last-16 if they avoid defeat against Ukraine. They will also qualify if Northern Ireland fail to beat Germany in the day's other Group C game.

Ukraine are already out as their inferior head-to-head record with Northern Ireland means they cannot avoid finishing bottom even if they sign of with a win today.

I'll keep you posted of the scenarios as the games progress either way.

Brazil 2014 or Euro 2016?

The answer in all these pictures is Euro 2016, despite the presence of Brazilian dancers partying with the Poland fans in the build up to this game.

It's incredibly random but everyone seems to be having a good time and that can only be a good thing in a tournament blighted by fan violence.

Top spot is up for grabs in Marseille this afternoon...

Not for Ukraine, they are history in Euro 2016, but Poland could qualify for the last-16 as group winners.

Don't write them off either. They looked a handy side in their draw against Germany but I'm just hoping their last group match isn't as dull as that goalless draw against the world champions.

Either way good afternoon all and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of Ukraine v Poland.

Poland fans cheer for their team before the UEFA Euro 2016 group game against Ukraine

Follow Sportsmail's coverage of Euro 2016 as Poland hope to secure their spot in the last-16 when they take on Ukraine in Marseille in their final Group C clash.

Poland go into the game in second spot but need just a draw to seal a place in the knock-out stages having already defeated Northern Ireland and grabbed a draw with world champions Germany.

They also take on a Ukraine side with nothing to play for as the Eastern European outfit were the first side eliminated from the tournament after successive defeats.
