  • Christie's had valued the bowl, which belonged to Joan's beloved Yorkie, Spike, for $500 to $800 but it far exceeded expectation
  • Spike's silk tasseled dog house also attracted interest and went for $2,250
  • Following the late star's death in 2014, her daughter Melissa decided to auction off some of her favorite items at Christie's in New York
  • In total the collection - which included jewelry, jackets and even furniture from the comedy queen's home - fetched nearly $2.2 million

Joan Rivers's dog bowl - which belonged to her beloved pet Spike - has fetched nearly $14,000 at auction.

The silver Tiffany and Co bowl, which is engraved with the Yorkie's name, went on sale as part of an auction of the late television host and comedian's possessions at Christie's in New York, The Private Collection of Joan Rivers. Spike died in 2001 aged 17.

The bowl sold for $13,750 - considerably more than the amount it was originally valued at, just $500-$800 - to an anonymous buyer.

In total, items belonging to the late star, who died in 2014 following complications after a throat procedure, fetched $2,199,125.

The top lot was a gold-mounted Faberge photograph frame from late 19th century Russia which went for $245,000. Christie's said its estimated value was thought to be $40,000 to $60,000.

Another highlight of the auction was a pair of Louis XVI-style cream-painted canapes which fetched $37,500.

Christie's said an online sale of additional items ended morning after Joan's daughter Melissa, 48, allowed the auction of dozens of her mother's possessions.

Joan died aged 81 in September 2014 after she stopped breathing at a private New York clinic during a medical procedure on her vocal cords.

Melissa filed a medical malpractice suit shortly after her mother's unexpected death, which was subsequently settled with the doctor's accepting responsibility.

Joan's love of Judith Leiber handbags is quite clear in the collection as well, with no less than eight up for sale.

A silver and gold crystal clutch evening bag by the designer was sold for $9,375.

Other highlights of the collection included sequin-adorned jackets and metallic blazers aplenty that are recognizable favorites of the late star.

Talking to People, Melissa claimed that initially she initially thought to herself about her mother's belongings: 'I'm not getting rid of anything. I'm keeping everything!'

'But little by little you start to weed through it. Now I want someone else to love her things and enjoy them,' she explained.

As for what she kept herself, Melissa opted to hold onto the little things like the 'good dishes' and 'her toothbrush cup'. She said: 'I kept the stuff from her night table. I kept strange things like that.'
