Roy Hodgson joins David Cameron as he quits after England are booted out of Euro 2016

England crashed out of the Euros following a shock defeat to footballing minnows Iceland, who beat the Three Lions 2-1 in the final round of 16 game of the Championships (pictured main). England fans went from ecstasy to agony in Nice after taking the lead against Iceland - only to concede two goals in the next ten minutes. Roy Hodgson stepped down as manager of the side following the game, stating he was 'unable to deliver' (shown right inset). Wayne Rooney gave the Three Lions the lead after just three minutes when Raheem Sterling won a penalty, but conceded almost straight away when Ragnar Sigurdsson poked home from short range. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson then scored to make it 2-1 to Iceland after placing a shot from the edge of the box, with England keeper Joe Hart unable to keep it out. Supporters expressed their disappointment (pictured bottom left and top left), as the Three Lions desperately probed for an equaliser in their quest to make the next round of the Euros and a showdown with hosts France. But it wasn't to be for the boys in white, who were sent packing after playing just one knockout game, with the WAGs left to pick up the pieces after an embarrassing night (pictured top right is Jamie Vardy and his wife Rebekah, while Dele Alli is shown with his girlfriend, bottom right).

Jeremy Corbyn faces Labour coup after 46 MPs quit over his handling of EU referendum

Jeremy Corbyn has refused to quit as Labour leader despite mass resignations from his front bench as fears grow the party could 'split' over the direction he is taking it in. Forty Six MPs stood down from their roles over his handling of the EU referendum and many 'savaged' him at what has been described as a 'brutal' Parliamentary Labour Party meeting. Mr Corbyn later addressed a huge crowd of supporters outside Parliament and told them he was going nowhere.

Only Labour, faced with a Government in disarray and a Tory Party in virtual civil war, could contrive to make themselves the focus instead, writes DOMINIC SANDBROOK.

He was accused of being 'in denial' during a brutal showdown with his own MPs tonight after he faced an extraordinary 45 resignations. The beleaguered Labour leader faced repeated demands to quit at a stormy hour-long session of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP). Around 20 spoke against him at the behind-closed doors meeting, with just two in his favour. Chris Bryant, who resigned as shadow Leader of the House earlier, said Mr Corbyn 'needed to go to Specsavers' if he could not see it was time to go. But the veteran left-winger insisted he was going nowhere - while aides said rebel MPs should 'put up' by triggering a leadership contest.

Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt among MPs to halt Boris Johnson and succeed David Cameron

At least eight leading Tory MPs were scrambling to cut backroom deals to succeed David Cameron last night after his departure from No10 was dramatically brought forward. Amid an announcement that Mr Cameron will be out of office by the start of September, the battle for the premiership exploded into life. Attempts to crown Boris Johnson in a 'coronation' fell flat when supporters of Home Secretary Theresa May made it clear she is determined to fight her old rival to the bitter end. The shortened timetable favours established politicians like Mr Johnson and Mrs May as it deprives lesser known candidates of the time to build momentum. Either could be Prime Minister in just nine weeks.

George Osborne makes first statement to answer critics after Brexit vote

Speaking at the Treasury today Mr Osborne (pictured), who has been under fire for failing to speak out after the UK voted Leave, re-emerged three days after the referendum result as he tried to calm the turmoil in the worldwide markets. This afternoon the pound dropped below $1.32 (inset), its lowest level since 1985, and below the low it hit on Friday after the Brexit result came in. Mr Osborne admitted that it would 'not be plain sailing' and had not changed his mind about the warnings he made before the referendum about the consequences of leaving the EU. He also performed a U-turn on his threat to call an emergency budget if Britain voted Leave. He said: 'It was not the outcome that I wanted or that I threw everything into campaigning for. Now that the people have spoken, we in this democracy must all accept that result and deliver on their instructions'.

How healthy is YOUR breakfast? The very best (and WORST) ways to start your day

Picking a nutritious breakfast can be a bit of a minefield. Last week the London campaign group Action on Sugar revealed that almost half of 'healthy' breakfast bars contain the same - or even more - sugar than a bowl of Coco Pops. We're meant to have no more than 90g of sugar per day, of which only 25g (six teaspoons) should be so-called 'free' sugar - that is, added in the form of sugar, syrups honey, or juiced fruits. Here we assess 29 popular breakfast choices and rate them out of ten.

DNA suggested she was likely the victim of a 'serious sexual assault' by suspected killer Arnis Zalkalns (bottom left) while above normal traces of what may have been the drug Gamma-hydroxybutyrate - which is used for a sleeping disorder - were found in her body. The details emerged as Alice's mother admitted she was 'stunned' that her daughter's suspected killer was allowed in the country. A century after the first day of the Somme, this account reveals awesome courage

In desperation, they turned to their British allies to break the deadlock. An Anglo-French assault 125 miles north at the Somme, they reasoned, would relieve German pressure at Verdun, or 'the Mincing Machine', as fatalistic French soldiers called it. The man with the plan was General Douglas Haig. Scottish, diligent and deeply religious, he had been made commander of the British Expeditionary Force only months before. Haig entrusted the British assault to the 4th Army, under General Henry Rawlinson. Haig wanted to attack on August 15, to allow for more training, but his French opposite number yelled: 'There will be no French Army left!' The date was set for July 1. Among the troops, there was mounting excitement. One soldier wrote to his mother: 'I will be home by August Bank Holiday.' Central to the Allied plan was a week-long bombardment to destroy the German barbed wire, trenches and fortifications.

Images show the universe's earliest galaxies in incredible detail

Astronomers at Nottingham University used an infrared telescope on Hawaii to peer at a patch of the sky four times the size of the moon, detecting 250,000 galaxies. Many of the galaxies were more than nine billion light years way while hundreds were emitting light within the first billion years of the universe, making them among the earliest found. Astronomers hope the Ultra-Deep Survey, as the project is known, will help them to learn more about the formation and evolution of galaxies. The image on the left shows a section that account for just 0.4 per cent of the full image obtained by the survey (pictured right).

Try not to double-take planet earth's most bizarre natural optical illusions

It's possible to produce amazing eye-tricking image on Photoshop, but Mother Nature can also rustle up incredible optical illusions, too - as these incredible images show. In fact, the planet is brimming with mind-boggling natural phenomena. One of the most baffling is the 'underwater vortex' in the Indian Ocean, where water appears to be flowing into a gigantic hole in the seabed. Then there's Blood Falls in Antarctica, which appears to be the horrific aftermath of a violent battle, with a red liquid cascading over the white Taylor Glacier. There is also a startling cloud formation that looks just like a UFO.
