British MPs today staged a debate about the state of Lindsay Lohan's career - even while the Conservative party faced unprecedented turmoil in the wake of the Brexit vote.

A furious backbench Tory slammed the US star for criticising his home town of Kettering in a series of tweets Miss Lohan sent on the night of the EU referendum.

Philip Hollobone demanded that the actress should visit the Midlands town - while a Cabinet Minister suggested that a trip to Kettering could boost the career of the troubled A-lister.

But despite the lighthearted tone of the discussion in the House of Commons, some voters suggested that MPs should concentrate on more important matters.

The debate came on a morning when Tory leadership frontrunner Boris Johnson withdrew from the contest after beingundermined by Michael Gove, with Britain in limbo ahead of negotiations to strike a new deal with Europe.

Miss Lohan made an unexpected intervention in British politics while she was watching the results of the referendum roll in last Thursday night.

In a string of impassioned tweets, the Mean Girls star railed against voters who opted to leave the EU and accused them of triggering global instability.

When Kettering in Northamptonshire voted Leave by a margin of 61 to 39 per cent, Miss Lohan wrote: 'Sorry, but Kettering where are you?'

Today Mr Hollobone, a longtime supporter of Brexit, used Business Questions - a Commons sessions where backbenchers can demand a debate on any topic of their choosing - to call for discussion on 'the involvement of celebrities in politics'.

He said: 'On referendum night a week ago, the pro-Remain American actress, Lindsay Lohan, in a series of bizarre tweets, slagged off areas of this country that voted to leave the European Union.

'At one point she directed a fierce and offensive tweet at Kettering, claiming that she had never heard of it and implying that no one knew where it was.

'Apart from the fact that it might be the most average town in the country, everyone knows where Kettering is.

'It is famous as the home of Weetabix breakfast cereal, and Cheaney and Loake shoes, and Kettering Town football club has scored more goals in the history of the FA Cup than any other football team in the country.'

The MP continued by inviting Miss Lohan to switch on Kettering's Christmas lights this winter, saying that it would 'redeem her political reputation'.

As other backbenchers giggled, Leader of the House Chris Grayling responded to Mr Hollobone on behalf of the Government.

He said: 'As those of us who have children will know, Lindsay Lohan, a star of child and teen movies, who was a very entertaining actress at the time, has not necessarily fulfilled her professional potential over the years.

'Perhaps now we know why, because had she visited Kettering, she might have seen her career turn around.'

Voters responded with bafflement to the bizarre debate and suggested that MPs' time might be better spent debating serious policy issues.

Joe Miller wrote on Twitter: 'How are we debating Lindsay Lohan in Parliament? What's happened to the country.'

Lauren Towell added: 'Wait are they seriously having a discussion about Lindsay Lohan in Parliament or did I read that wrong? Please tell me it's a joke.'

And Adam Heath drew attention to the more straight-faced agenda in the House of Lords, saying: 'Why are the unelected lads in the Lords discussing real issues whilst the elected Commons talk about Lindsay Lohan?'
