Tost: Sainz Jr. result a 'big success'
4 July 2016 – Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost says that Carlos Sainz Jr.'s eighth-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix represents a "big success" after the outfit's qualifying troubles.
Sainz Jr. ground to a halt amid plumes of smoke at the end of a restarted Q1 session, following team-mate Daniil Kvyat's suspension failure, which led to a dramatic crash.
Sainz Jr. took on a new engine and started the race 15th, while Kvyat lined up in the pit lane with a new chassis, and Tost was pleased to see Toro Rosso's hard work rewarded.
"After our problems in qualifying, Carlos' P8 is a big success for us," said Tost.
"Having to prepare the car with another engine is always a risk, as you don't have the chance to run it before the race, but fortunately the team did a fantastic job to get the car ready in such a good way.
"Carlos drove a great race, with a lot of overtaking as well as managing the tyres very well."
Sainz Jr. added: "I'm very pleased with my race – we didn't have an easy one.
"We did a good start, managing to get into the top 10 in the early stages.
"Suddenly, after the second pit-stop during the Safety Car period, we were nearly last…
"It meant we had to do a very good last stint on the Soft tyres – 35 laps – overtaking lots of cars and managing to get back into the top eight, something a bit unexpected after seeing myself back in P15.
"After a tough Saturday, I'm happy to finish with a good result as we've worked very hard."
Daniil Kvyat pulled off track after two laps due a mechanical issue.
