Jolie, 41, portrayed the English archaeologist-adventurer in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and reprised her role for the 2003 sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life.
Both films grossed a cumulative $432 million at the worldwide box office and were based on the heroine from the Tomb Raider video game first published in 1996 by the London-based video company Eidos, which is now part of Square Enix
Vikander previously drew critical acclaim for her portrayal of the humanoid robot Ava with artificial intelligence in the 2015 sci-fi thriller Ex Machina.
Meanwhile, the Swedish actress last week attended the Australia premiere of her action spy thriller Jason Bourne starring 45-year-old Matt Damon.
