ABOUT

The Association of Illustrators (AOI) is a not-for-profit trade organisation promoting contemporary illustration and maintaining industry standards. Established in 1973 the AOI has worked successfully with businesses and colleges to increase the standing of illustration as a profession and improve commercial and ethical conditions. With a membership that includes freelance illustrators, agents, students and colleges the AOI continues to support and educate future generations at every stage of their career.

Many notable illustrators are amongst our patrons including Ralph Steadman, Sir Quentin Blake, Shirley Hughes an Raymond Briggs.

AOI ACTIVITIES INCLUDE

Membership

AOI services include an advice line for contracts and pricing, an extensive pricing survey with rates of pay across all sectors, portfolio advice,
and a wide range online advice and resources in the members section of this website.

Campaigning

The AOI actively campaigns to maintain and protect the rights of our members through the Pro-Action Campaign and Liaison Group,
the British Copyright Council, the Creators Rights Alliance and the European Illustrators Forum.

Varoom! and VaroomLab

The AOI publishes a quarterly Magazine, featuring articles and editoral on current illustration practice. The AOI is the founder member of VaroomLab,
a forum for academic enquiry and debate on illustration set up in partnership with a number of leading Universities.

Exhibition and Events

A regular programme of talks, seminars, training events, partnership projects, education programmes and exhibitions for students, illustrators,
commissioners and the general public.

AOI Illustration Awards

The AOI is the producer of the UK’s only jury selected international illustration competition celebrating the work of new graduates and professional illustrators.

Publications

The AOI publishes a range of titles including The Illustrator’s Guide to Law and Business Practice and contact directories for commissioners in the editorial, advertising an publishing sectors.
