A kind policeman has been hailed a hero after helping a confused woman with dementia home from the supermarket and letting her hold his hand the whole way.

The officer, known only as PC Dave, also helped put the woman's shopping away before placing her flowers on her windowsill when he came to her rescue in Sainsbury's.

The pensioner had become distressed at the checkout after realising she had not taken her purse to pay for her groceries.

Staff at the store in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, then contacted the police as she became increasingly upset.

When officers arrived at the store to help the woman, the dementia sufferer was scared and did not want to let go of PC Dave's hand.

He then allowed her to hold his hand all the way back home while he kept his hand on the gear stick.

Once back home, PC Dave helped the woman put her shopping away and put her flowers on display.
